Check out my pre-World Race journey at Bmilam.blogspot.com
I have imagined this day so many times, I can’t believe I’m the one writing an “about me”. ‘I’ve appreciated/stalked/followed World Race bloggers since October 2012 and now my time has come. Documenting this journey will be the best souvenir and spiritual encouragement from this adventure of a life time. I’m so thankful God has taken my dreams and made them bigger than I could have ever Imagined! So with a grin from ear to ear, here goes…..
Hi I’m Beth Milam (my-lum)
I’ll be blogging about once a week until I launch so this “about me” is hopefully going to provide you with a bit of insight of where I’m coming from and where I’m headed!
1. October 2012 I heard about the World Race.
2. I will Graduate from Jacksonville State University this May 2014 with a degree in Recreation Leadership & Communications. What’s Recreation Leadership? Welllll I dream of becoming a NPO Camp Director. I love Jesus, I love kids, I love the outdoors and I love it together!
3. I also dream of becoming Miss America! ha ha I competed in Miss Alabama in June 2012 as Miss Jacksonville State University. (side note: This was the beginning of how I would discover the World Race!) I continue to compete in (MAO) Preliminary Pageants. I have 6 preliminaries to make it back before Miss Alabama 2014. (Side note: Feel free to follow this struggle bus on Instagram/twitter/Facebook as I do my very best to make it to the Miss Alabama stage one last time.) Twitter & Instagram: barista_beth
4.I am the youngest of 3, Chris is 27 & Noah is 24. Chris is a car genius, He turns a ‘piece’ into a PRIZE! Noah is married to Sweet Haley and they have 2 daughters, 4 year old Jennah and baby #2 expected to be here at the beginning of march! I love my brothers and we couldn’t be more opposite if we tried.
5. I am a double dose Military kid. My Dad is a retired Army Captain and Master Sargent Mom is currently active duty at the 117th Air Refueling Wing. #GoArmy #GoAirForce
6.I’ve moved a grand total of 23 times in my 23 years of life.
7. Its rumored that I may or may not have been a collegiate mascot during the 2010-1013 seasons and I allegedly loved every second I supposedly spent wearing a gigantic sweaty red bird (Gamecock) suit for every pep rally, tailgate, football game, softball event, preview day, parade, photo shoot, basketball tournament, and commercial thrown my way.
8. I LOVE my Jacksonville State Gamecocks!!!
9. I recently discovered I have a strong connection to Morgan Freeman, Einstine, Whoopie Goldberg, Chewbacca the Wookie, and Tina Fey. We all have the same middle name!! Ok, kidding we’re all lefties and have sufficiently adapted in this right handed world.
10. My friends say I have Happy Feet! I dance, all the time.
11. Speaking of my friends… they are my family, my support system, my brothers and sisters… God didn’t have to but He really did show off when it comes to who he placed in my life. Ahh, I’m so thankful for my Best Friends and I can’t wait to write about them too 😉
12. Medium dirty soy vanilla chai! I’m a barista! I work at Java Jolt, a wonderful little coffee shop on the square in Jacksonville! If you’re ever in the area pop in, grab a mug, say Hi!
13.I’m a proud lifetime member of the Girl Scouts. #TeamNoShame
14.Knowing a total of 0 people I up and moved to the North Shore of Oahu the Summer before my Junior Year of College. I worked at YMCA Camp H.R. Erdman with the most diverse loving charismatic group of international crazies! The staff and the campers changed my life and opened my mind to appreciate differences. It was there that I discovered something that lit me up, it was there that I found my passion for growing the kingdom of God and loving the nations. I wouldn’t be me without them.
15. I consider myself a Master-Crafter, I love canvas art, doodling, refurbishing, painting, sewing ect.
16. Running, writing, and napping are my favorite stress relievers.
17. I think ‘creative freedom’ is my love language. Along with sunsets, HOT NOW krispy kreme doughnuts ,quality time, york peppermint patties, impromptu road trips, words of affirmation and Ben Rectors new album.
18. I like pranks. Like really like pranks! Both being the pranker and the prankiee… I honestly think I’ll spend my life recovering from the last one but thankfully it’s just a lifetime membership to Cat Facts….. Paul Sewell.
19. ENFJ
20. Eternal Optimist. I check for front parking spots, I believe in living life to the fullest, stopping to say thank you, and eating dessert.
21. I am passionate about people and their stories. What we go through and where we’ve been says a lot for who we are and why we are that way. I believe EVERYONE deserves to be heard and we all have a story to share.
22. I’m a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and I love my sorority! “To think in terms of ALL Mankind and our service to the world… to find satisfaction in being rather than seeming, thus strengthening in us the higher qualities of the spirit; to prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving… to look for the good in everyone; to see beauty, with its enriching influence; to be humble in success without bitterness and defeat; devotion to the Right, the Good, and the True, without a discordant note; remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was Love, “the greatest of all things.” #ZTA #ZLAM
23. I’ve worked at a summer camp every summer for the past 10 years! Camp people are the best kind of people.
24.In May of 2012 I traveled to Haiti with a small group of college friends serving a community, hosting a sports camp, teaching kindergarden and witnessing the holy spirit in action! So much to say and Glory to God I can’t wait to tell you more in a future blog dedicated to my time in Haiti!
25. I Love Jesus. I didn’t meet Him until I was 19 years old.
For My Squad Mates:
I can’t wait to meet you! I’ve prayed for you and imagined what you would be like for so long that when I finally do meet you I’ll probably cry ohh who am I kidding I’m going to cry. God planned this way before we knew what any of this was. He knows that we need each other and he knows we all have something to give. It’s in His plan for me to know you and I just can’t contain my excitement!!!!
I nickname everything, people things, places…. its probably a camp thing.
I mentioned happy feet but did I mention I’m a disney show tune fanatic so get ready for those travel days to a whole new world. Literally.
I enjoy making friendship bracelets and teaching other how to as well! Great inexpensive way to connect and pass time!
I consider braiding hair an art form, so sisters get ready for Beth’s beauty salon at least once a month.
Im certified in a lot of what I consider practical skill sets, wilderness first aid, swift water rescue, horse backriding, lifeguarding, small water craft safety, high ropes, low ropes, LNT, Archery, orienteering, wilderness survival….. look I’m ready!
I have 2 older brothers and I’m a camp person… not a lot grosses me out. Bring on the questionable food, days without bathing, squatty potties, dirty feet, lice, unidentified bug bites, and stomach issues. 4 continents? We’re all bound to get sick at some point so know that you’re never alone!
I share well with others! Just not my toothbrush. some stuff must remain off-limits.
I thrive in a group setting, hearing the word teamwork is music to my ears.
I LOVEEEEEEEE Birthdays! A special day dedicated to you and how Great God made You! They really should happen more often and should always be celebrated!
This year has only just begun and it’s already my favorite. I’ll graduate, I’ll possibly be in Miss Alabama again, and I’ll leave in September for a year long mission trip around the world spreading the Gospel, growing the Kingdom of God and meeting the need when I arrive!! Ahhh Thank You God! I said “Here I am send me” (Isaiah 6:8) but never in my wildest dreams did I imaging it looking like this!
If you are Interested in supporting me in anyway whether through encouragement, prayer, or financial support PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me by phone, email, Facebook or the SUPPORT ME BAR at the top of this Blog! I cant wait to see how God provides and uses the relationships that are currently changing my life. I would love it if YOU joined in on the best year of my life so far!
Peace & Blessings,
