Little girls raped at 5 years old.

Young girls pulled into the brothels because their mothers couldn’t pay back the money they “owed.”

Generations of women working as prostitutes because they don’t know what else to do.

If there was one ministry I didn’t want to work with while on the World Race, I would have quickly answered, “Human trafficking.” I didn’t understand it, didn’t want to see it, and didn’t think I would enjoy it.

I did expect, however, to have at least one month working with such a ministry. Just not yet. I figured it would be in Asia, possibly Thailand or the Philippines or Cambodia. Never did I expect it in Nicaragua.

But here we are, working with Breaking Chains, a ministry serving women and children who are victims of sex trafficking and prostitution.

Still unsure of whether I really wanted to be serving with this ministry this month, I sat listening to Steven Cass, the founder, share about the ministry, his passion, and what God is doing.

And my whole attitude about this ministry changed. God opened my eyes to the needs and the injustice, but also to the chains that He is breaking here!

God is working in incredible ways here! He is using this ministry to change lives all around Latin America.
This is Breaking Chains’ mission statement and gives you a little idea of the heart and passion involved in this ministry:

To fight for the freedom of innocent women and children who have been caught in the chains of prostitution, sex trafficking and sexual abuse. To give these victims hope through the saving grace of Jesus Christ in safe, loving homes and outpatient programs that provide a holistic solution that includes Christian counseling, training, independent living and work skills, as well as the education necessary to enable them to live productive lives.

To not only rescue and restore these victims, but to train them to become disciples of Christ, who in turn will become part of the solution, using their new lives to help others find freedom.

We’ve only been here a week and I have fallen in love with this ministry. Last week, we had the opportunity to worship, play games, and fellowship with the dozen or so women in the discipleship program. I’ve been able to play with their kids and hold their babies. This week, we will have the opportunity to teach some of the women English and pray for and with them.

We've been blessed by the women here, but also by our contacts, Steven and his wife, Kenia, as well as their coworker, Joan. I am continually amazed by the people God places in our lives each month who are a wonderful example of serving Him!

I am sure I will have plenty of stories to share, so watch back for more on how God is working through this incredible ministry. Until then, check out their website at www.breakingchains.org.

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for me, for He breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
