There are a lot of definitions for communion that range from fellowship to sharing of intimate thoughts to elements of the Eucharist. I’m sure there are plenty of others but I think for most of you there is something visual that pops into your mind. My guess is something like this may come into mind:

Now there is probably a good chance that you also accompany this thought with a very somber period of time where churches often review their sins and try to focus a bit on the price He paid on the cross. This is a time of silence usually that offers a quick glimpse into our hearts where we are a bit more honest than usual with the fact that we aren’t worthy on our own and that we are drastically dependent on His grace. We try to conjure up a gratefulness that sometimes is even sincere for the things He did on the cross.

However, I’ve been pondering a few things lately. One is that we often think about the day we asked Jesus into our hearts. I know that He has given Christians His Spirit (not a duplicate or a copy) and that our bodies are His temple. I also know that He came to Earth to become one of us so that we could become one with Him. Jesus was always plan A and even without the addition of sin into the world we would have needed Him to become us (even though we are made in His image) if we were ever to have a chance to become truly unified in Him. Regardless, the point I wanted to make is that our salvation has more to do with us accepting His free gift and being invited into His heart than us offering Him an invitation into our hearts…does that make sense to you?

I think often times we view Him like the piece of cracker and small cup of juice. We want a piece of Him in us and we take that little piece very seriously. He says “this is my body broken for you” and “this is the cup shed with my blood”…take, eat and drink of it. He’s asking us to eat completely of Him and drink completely of His cup…not just get a taste of me in your lives! The question really is if He is Lord of your life or not. He’s either Lord of it all or not.

Jesus counted it pure joy on the cross not because of the price He had to pay but because of the value of what He was getting in return. He is love and He created us to be loved and to be love. He enjoys pouring out His extravagant love on us. Even now, I bet some of you readers had a silent reaction inside of you when you read that He enjoys pouring out His love on you in particular with extravagance. We often believe He will love others in abundance but often times we view Him as being stingy towards us. You may want to defend yourselves right now but when we’re truly honest, we may realize that we often live that way…yes? Jimmy McCarty wrote an excellent blog on this subject a couple months ago and I’d suggest reading it. You can find his blog here: http://jimmymccarty.theworldrace.org/  He has some really good blogs!!

Anyway, if you believe He wants to bless in abundance then I have another random thought for you. Jesus is not on the cross anymore. He’s alive! We celebrate it once again in the tomorrow but it should be a constant celebration.  He came to give us life and that in abundance as well. Taking and drinking deeply of His cup will provide a variety of easy and hard but good circumstances in your life. However, it will also will be full and overflowing. What He has to offer us is a FEAST and yet we often settle for a sip and a taste of what He has to offer.

So is your actual communion with the Lord more representative of feasting with Him or getting a taste of Him for a few minutes in your day?
