Feeding programs, construction work, relationship building, testimony speaking, game playing, bible teaching and cultural living. All examples of the physical things we have been able to partake in so far on the World Race. However, the true definition comes from the personal lessons and growth learned as a result of experiencing these while in a community. If there is one thing the WR knows how to do it is creating an opportunity for refinement of personal/relational struggles through community.

Unlike church camps or conferences the WR differs by intentionally placing us in situations we would often avoid rather than face, be it personal or physical. It’s in these moments where there is often hurt or unhealthy standards set by our past which we would never change or even notice. Retreats, camps and conferences are grand when it comes to learning lessons but when the week is over, you are often left to your own devices. The WR however gives you the opportunity to change and continue to walk in that with accountability through a multitude of life circumstances which embed the change in your heart.

I would even venture out to say that the WR is a year of “fast forwarded life.” Not in the manner of rushing through life but in the manner of life reached. From just a mere two months on the field I already can see growth and character refinement within myself that I didn’t see happening for years to come back in the states.

On that note, the WR isn’t an escape from anything happening at home, for your heart still travels with you. It isn’t 11 months without struggle either, it’s life just as it is wherever you live now. Things aren’t handed to you, if anything you have to reach and pray for them harder. Personal relationships may be more of a struggle simply because there is little room for selfishness and all the space for humility and service. You still have to be autonomous in your decision making, purposeful with your daily time off, intentional about rest and work time, lead when you are called to lead and follow when you are called to follow.

It is no doubt a place for healing. A place where you learn that healing yourself often comes through healing others; whether that be through community service, prayer walks, soccer games, wheel chair rides in the nursing home or inter-squad friendships. The atmosphere is blessed with healing and to get it most often times the Lord calls us to give it. So why not give it authentically.
