When I was a cheerleader in high school, we would attend cheer camps to help us learn new skills and also to give us ideas on how to host our own cheer camps. One of the songs they would teach us at camp went like this:
If I had a little white box to put my Jesus in
I’d take Him out and kiss, kiss, kiss
(put your hand to your mouth and act like you are giving Jesus a kiss)
And share Him with a friend.
If I had a little red box to put the devil in.
I’d take him out and smash his head (stomp your foot on the ground)
Then put him back again.
I would teach that song for years. During VBS’ (vacation bible school), Invasion’s (a summer outreach), and any sort of kids ministry I was apart of.
What was I teaching those kids??
That it’s nice to have Jesus at our disposal whenever we please. Just take him out of our little white box and give him kisses and share him with somebody. The problem I have with this song is the fact that we put Jesus back in the box. The song may not say it but we know we do it.
One of the biggest things I had to overcome on the World Race was the fact that I had placed God in a box. I had placed Him in the box of my denomination, my experience of him, what he had brought me through, etc. I left him there, not expecting much else to happen, at least nothing that I hadn’t already seen before.
The race blew God right out of that box for me! Once I surrendered my preconceived notions of God, He showed me that He was so much bigger than the box I had put him in and once I decided to not try and limit him to my logical way of thinking, He did the miraculous! Down here at CGA (center for global action), we have courses on Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. I’m taking two courses, Discovering Your Calling and Dangerous Jesus.
Deon Vanstaden is our instructor for Dangerous Jesus, which is a book written by Seth Barnes, Sr, the founder of Adventures In Missions. It’s absolutely incredible and is teaching me so much about being dangerous like Jesus was.
Here are a couple of things that really stuck out to me from today’s lecture.
One of the reasons we are not dangerous in our walk with God is because we put a limit on Him and we keep Him in our boxes.
Take your hand. Place it on your head. Take it off and maintain the shape of your head in your hand. Look at your hand and say, “God is bigger than this!” Translation: God is bigger than our understanding. God is bigger than what our minds can hold.
Think about all the great men and women of the Bible. Noah built the ark. Abraham had a son that God had promised. David defeated Goliath. Daniel dared to pray. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were rescued from the fiery furnace. Peter walked on water. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.
Hebrews 11 does not say that “by their RISK they accomplished such great things.” No! It says “By FAITH…”
Hebrews 11:6 says “And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Whenever we trust God, we never take a RISK, we take a step of FAITH!
When we step out, God will show up for us, just like he did for all those mighty men and women of God that have gone before us.
My challenge to you:
-
What is the one thing, in your walk with God, that you are most comfortable with?
-
What is the one thing, in your walk with God, that you are the most uncomfortable with?
Challenge that thing you are most comfortable with and take it into deeper levels with the Lord. Don’t ever become comfortable with God. He has so much more for us than even our comfort levels can contain.
If we remain comfortable in what we’re comfortable with, we will become stagnant!
The price of freedom is to dare to become dangerous, just like Jesus!
Take a step of faith this week and watch God do the incredible!
