Before coming to Swaziland I found it super hard to hear the voice of God, or what most people call the still small whisper. At one point I just assumed that he didn’t speak to me. I was so very wrong. In fact, he speaks to me all throughout the day whether it’s through a teammate or a butterfly. But hearing his voice clearly and being able to distinguish it from my own has not happened overnight and its still something I’m learning on a daily basis.
Before the race, I learned about the different ways that he speaks to us. For whatever reason, I couldn’t figure out which one worked for me. But after arriving in Swaziland I found out that he speaks to me through his word, the living word. So God placed a desire in my heart to read his word and grow in the knowledge of him.
I can remember the first time I realized that he spoke to me most clearly through his word. I was reading my Bible one morning and certain versus just seemed to pop off the page at me. After I couldn’t get enough and my coffee dates with Jesus became the best part of my day. Every morning I’m up with the sun with a cup of coffee and my Bible. Reading to see what he has to say to me that day.
My coffee dates with Jesus have three essential things. First a clear mind, and a desire to grow. Second my Bible with some highlighters, and pens to write down all the cool things the Lord shows me as I read. The third coffee, but here the best we can get is instant coffee that sometimes tastes a little like vinegar…
My knowledge of the word has grown so much in the past two months. Being able to distinguish his voice from my own has become easier. I’ve learned that He was talking to me the entire time. I just had to take the time to listen.
