So this month has my team doing a variety of tasks, from making piñatas to making a soccer field for a school by digging up dirt and relocating it.
It’s been a lot of hard work. My back and shoulders ache by the end of each work day. It “hurts so good,” though! I feel like I’m working hard each day, and I’m giving my all.
We’re investing in this community in a different way than I have so far on the Race.
Every day we go up to a school in the mountains, feed the kids breakfast–all 22 of them–and then we typically work 2-3 hours moving dirt. We’re trying to make a safe space where they can run, kick a ball, and just have fun.
What tools do we have?
2 shovels, 2 pick axes, 2 hoes, and a wheel barrow. Oh. And ourselves.
I must say, physically, this has been exhausting.
But with every shovel full of dirt, I’m reminded of some awesome truths.
– The Lord asks me to work. My walk with Him is not something that will happen on its own. I have to work to keep communication lines open. It’s an effort to keep going deeper in my relationship with Him.
– Resting is not a sign of weakness. Our bodies get tired. And a way to help them recover is to rest. While shoveling, I take short breaks to rest my back, legs, arms, so that I can have the strength to keep working the rest of the day. The same is true in my spiritual life. Resting in The Lord is vital. Sometimes, all He wants me to do is just dwell in His presence, rest in His love. I’ve loved being here, because Jesus has been showing me how to rest, and more importantly, how to be okay resting.
– Keep your eyes on the Prize. While working on making the soccer field, it would be really easy to be overwhelmed. It’s going to take quite a few more days of digging before we finish. So instead of being overwhelmed by the project, my eyes are on Jesus–on what He’s calling me to do in that moment. I don’t have to worry about tomorrow or the next day. Just today, in this moment. He’s got the rest under control.

Anyway.
This month has been good so far. I’m excited to see what else He has in store for us as we go and follow the Spirit.
