Today our team gathered up the
tools, piled in a pickup truck, and drove an hour out of the city of Maputo.
The bumpy ride and landscape felt like a safari… minus seeing any lions or giraffes.
We are out in the ‘middle of nowhere’ to help put the finishing touches on a
school construction project. The checklist includes: finish the wiring, mix up
cement for patching, mount the doors, and weed the land. The girl teammates are
perfectly willing & capable of doing all of these things, but in today’s
case, there we’re “too many hands”. So the girls were told to “let the guys
handle it” while we go find other ways to bless the community. So, here’s an
overview of what we did…

We pumped water with the women. They
do this every single day, and it is hard work. These well pumps are the only
source of water and they are very scarce. The women fill up 5gallon jugs and
carry them on their heads back to their homes… over and over. We brought a
wheel barrel to help transport the water… I can barely balance a book on my
head.

We played soccer… and any other game
you can imagine… barefoot of course.

We visited homes and got to meet all
the baby animals.

We ran a VBS & made a lot of
friends.

When asked to weed the schoolyard,
we made sure we had lots of little helping hands. =)

I
was raised around construction and love doing manual labor; so I usually get
offended when the ‘guys’ think I’m not capable of assisting. Not here- I’ll
ditch my pride and hang out with an African village community any day. It was extremely
rewarding and one of my top memories of the World Race so far.
