This is important. These are a few lessons that I think you should know about the World Race.
Rule #1:
DO inform yourself of the cultures you’re diving into.
I know the thought of traveling to 11 different countries in 11 months seems so exciting! You’re trusting that the Lord will guide your steps along the way, and trust me you’re right, HE absolutely WILL. However, the locals will feel honored and loved if you learn how to greet them and show that you are eager to learn more about their culture from them. I cannot express this enough. Also, remember that American culture isn’t right and the rest of the world is wrong. It’s just different. Just say that out loud, “It’s not right or wrong. It’s just different.” Embrace it, learn from it, show them who Jesus is through the way you love them.
Rule #2:
DO empower others.
Often time missionaries think that their presence is what helps people to encounter the love of God. False. It’s not about you or me, it’s all about Him and the work that He’s already doing in these nations. You will meet wonderful people that are doing full time mission work in the countries that you’re going to. Our job as world racers is to encourage and empower the kingdom work that they have already started. Sometimes, you’ll get to pioneer and start something new. But oftentimes just remember to love your hosts well, share your journey with them and let them know that God’s kingdom is expanding and growing all across the globe. Tell them that you’ll be praying for them long after you leave. Also, if you meet the man or woman of peace while you’re on the field, empower them to step into whatever it is that God is calling them to.
Rule #3:
Leave a remnant.
By this, I don’t mean a friendship bracelet, or items that you’re dropping, even though those are awesome too. What I mean is, leave them with something that doesn’t just remind them of you, but reminds them of Jesus. Leave your ministries better than you found them. Make sure each month, you were able to leave your hosts or new friends with one thing that can help them with their walk with the Lord.
Rule #4:
He > I
Meditate on these words everyday. John 3:30. Period.
Rule #5:
The race is a lot about identity and personal growth.
When I first signed up for the race, I thought it was going to be hugely focused on outreach and cultures. Which it is, sometimes. But oftentimes our days are focused on each other and the team, giving and receiving feedback and helping each other grow. If you’re looking for community, trust me you’ll receive plenty of that. Just remember, when you discover more of your identity in Christ, He can use you at your fullest potential for the kingdom. It’s a hard but beautiful journey you will soon uncover. Embrace it, the good, the bad and even the ugly days.
Final Rule:
ALWAYS, ask yourself at the end of each month, who did you get to pour into?
God is going to bless you with someone each month that you can invest in and get to know. Love these people well, ask them about their story. Invite them over to eat lunch with your team. Spend an adventure day with them. Do a Bible study with them. Take photos with them, write them notes. Spend time with them and talk to them about Jesus. Some of my greatest memories of the race were the days when I would just chill with the locals and learn so much about their culture and share the love of Jesus together with them.
I love you guys and I’m praying that you’ll have an incredible race like mine was! These are just a few hard lessons that I had to learn along the way. But there are so many beautiful lessons you’ll learn too. Take lots of photos along the way, and write about everything! Soak it all in. “There is nothing more satisfying than when the people you love the most, love Jesus the most.”
Love, B.
