I grew up in the church. In Stow, Ohio we went to St. Stephen's Lutheran church. I was baptized, loved Sunday school. My parents were active members and we went every week.
We moved to Texas, and nothing changed. I enjoyed going to church. I went on youth trips. I played and sang at Easter services. I worked Vacation Bible School. I volunteered for just about every student ministry event possible.
I graduated high school and signed a scholarship at Houston Baptist University. I attended Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I prayed before every track meet.
I graduated college. I signed up for a mission trip with Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. I stepped into Kenya with fifteen strangers, and God changed my world.
My only complaint about the entire mission trip, was that I had to come home. My heart had been broken while we were there. I saw poverty, violence, sickness and abandonment. I also saw gratefulness, healing, love, faith, forgiveness and joy like I had never seen before. I went there to change their world, to help them, to teach them, to build and provide for them. But the work I did is no comparison to the part they played in Christ changing my heart.
From the moment we got on the plane to leave Kenya, I told our team leader, Scott, that I was going back. I wanted to do more, I wanted to show others Christ the way it had been showed to me in Kenya. So that is what I am going to do with the World Race.
