So…this is a simple thing. But something I’ve been doing consistently over the last few weeks.
I make eye contact. I smile.
Yep, that’s it.
Walking around the school campus here in Thailand, when I’m on the streets of Bangkok, getting my daily coffee fix at the shop down the road, when I’m going through security at the airport, when I’m boarding the plane, when I see my squadmate who I don’t see eye to eye with….when I see anyone—I make eye contact and S M I L E.
When back in the states the same will still stand. Smile at the homeless man you always give $20 to, at the lady in the grocery store you accidentally bump into, when the guy from dominos drops off your pizza, at the gas station to the grandma filling up her car, or the new coworker walking down the hall at the office.
It’s so easy in our day to day lives whether on the field serving or back in the states working a 9-5 to say to yourself, “I’m too busy.” But how much time does it take to make eye contact and smile? Legit-ly like no extra time in the scheme of things.
Why is it such a hard thing for us to actually let someone know we SEE them. As followers of Jesus it should be second nature for us to make people feel seen, heard, loved, and known.
Imagine the difference it will make. Imagine the relationships you will start.
Slow it down. Be kind. Rewind. Start letting people know you see them.
This is just one simple step to begin to get out of the norm of society-and into a kinder life for yourself and others. Give it a try.
