Romania 101
500 Euro (or about 700 USD). This is the
estimated monthly cost for a Romanian family to keep their adolescent child in school, and the reason for a 20% and rising teenage drop-out rate. Low-income families simply cannot afford it. Subsequently, in this land where one-third of even the enrolled high school students never take their graduation exam, more than 500,000 Romanians are iliterate.
Romania is also where our team will be living for the month of July, 2011. We will teach English to these school-aged children, and organize sporting events for them
to join in after classes.
As we get ready to help in this way, I want to learn more about the Romanian people. What if they don't speak any English – how will they know that I care if I am not even able to communicate? My first step in the right direction: a quick lesson on common Romanian phrases. Ready to learn with me? After this we'll all be a little more versed in the beautiful Romanian language.
