My team and I have officially completed our first two weeks in Nakuru, Kenya.  It has been pretty crazy because in addition to our team of seven, the three squad leaders stayed with us during week one.  Talk about a cozy house!  It was good though. Ready to hear a little bit about the day-to-day action?  Here are a few nonsense things of the month:

  • My name.  Once again it means something strange.  This month its “cat”

  • Lenard the “Limo”.  This is our classic hoopty, which miraculously gets us from A to B on fairly consistent basis.  Unfortuantely this model is lacking windshield wipers….be praying for us 😉

  • The music at church.  Everything is set to an island back-beat on the keyboard, amped up to FULL VOLUME.

  • African time.  It seems to fall a few hours later than whatever time you decide on.  Ironically, we were taught the phrase, “chop-chop” last weekend when we couldn’t make a decision fast enough, haha.

  • The weather.  It goes from about 80 to 50 in 5 minutes.  It will be intensely warm with the sun, and then the winds change and all of a sudden you’re caught in the middle of a DOWNPOUR.  This happens at least once a day.

  • Catch Phrases.  When someone says “praise the Lord!” or “Hallelujah” you say “Amen!” to seal it and scare away the Devil.

  • “Mozoongoo” means “white person” and the locals shamelessly and excitedly yell this at you everywhere you go.

Our days are beginning to find a rhythm of waking up to the sunshine, getting out for a jog, breakfast, prayer, lunch, and then it’s off to “evangelize” in the neighborhood around the church.  Dinner usually happens at a time half of our team is starting to drift off to sleep, but we are trying to train our stomachs to adjust to this new ‘schedule’.
