Sorry fam, it is not the way you wish I was engaged but now I have your attention.

On the First of January my team member, Megan, had a team time that encouraged to think about what we wanted our word for the year to be. For the past two years my word had been patience, so I knew it was time for a new word. After thinking about it and praying I decided on the word engaged. I want to work this year on staying engaged; in the word, with my family, with friends, with finishing art, with discipleship, and so much more. I want to work on being reliable and showing I care by staying engaged in others lives as well as finishing things that I have started.

With choosing this as my word, I won’t lie, it has brought up thoughts about being engaged to somebody. Especially after celebrating Valentine’s day this week. If we are being real, I honestly thought I would be married by this point in my life. I would have a good job and a cute house; but that wasn’t a part of the Lords plan. I know now that I haven’t been anywhere near ready for marriage up to this point.

We talked this week about how God’s love is far better then any love here on earth, and how we should celebrate our singleness. I believe that 100%, but it can be hard sometimes seeing people back home getting married or having babies and thinking about how I was still living with my parents before the race. Our host was speaking at CRU the other night and said something that really spoke to me. She said,

“God didn’t create you in half.”

God created us to not be alone, but he also didn’t create us to wait around for “our other half.” Singleness is something he created that is just as important as marriage. It can be hard at times, but your time for marriage will come in his timing. In order to embrace singleness I want to use this time to be engaged. Learn from my teammates, grow in God’s word, spend time with my family, and focus on now. Never be so focused on the future that you miss out on the amazing things God has for you now. So embrace the time of being single: Grow with the men/women around you, learn how to cook, do the World Race, have sleepovers, go to concerts out of town last minute just because you can. Most importantly grow in your own relationship with the Lord before starting to depend on someone else to determine who you are in Christ.
