Let me just be honest and tell you that after last week I needed a real attitude adjustment. It did not take me long to realize that IT’S NOT ABOUT ME! God is moving and working in ways that are bigger than I can see. This week I have learned that I have failed to see the bigger picture, instead I have been looking for that instant change.
Our team had the opportunity to be blessed by our squad leaders, Robby and Tara, for the week. They came and worked beside us, talked with us, laughed with us, and encouraged us. I was sitting with Tara one night and we had been discussing last weeks youth event when she reminded me the story of Nehemiah. Nehemiah had a pretty sweet job as a cup-bearer, which meant that he got to sample all the wine before the King did. This was everything that he knew, his job, his passion, and his life until one day God told him that he was to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Basically Nehemiah left everything that he knew to go and do something that he had no idea how to do. He was not skilled but yet he trusted God and God prevailed for Jerusalem.
Friday youth group came again, and with a new found attitude, I was utterly amazed at what I saw! There were at least 50 kids who showed up! We did entice them to come this week because we had a beat box and dance off competition. Admist the chaos of 50 screaming kids, several drunks teens, rolling and smoking pot outside… God was there and working for a bigger purpose. I FULLY BELIEVE that God is preparing the hearts of these kids to trust the church, and build their relationship with the youth workers. I never thought that I would see the day (and actually understand!) where dancing and rapping would BRING KINGDOM! All they need is a safe place and someone to LOVE them and this is the only place they are getting any of that!
This entire night was huge for our team! Eric and Tanna spent the majority of the night talking with two guys who were asking everything about Christianity. God had me get up and give a message during all the chaos… don’t ask me what I said because it was not me! Em, Emily, and Caley spent the night just praying for the kids and for the night. It is times like these that I understand God has a bigger purpose, even if I may not see myself as “fully equipped.” When God called Nehemiah out of everything he knew to do something he knew nothing about, he did it and that is exactly what i have to do.
