When I left for The World Race I thought that I was leaving behind everything that I knew. I was wrong.. Specifically, I thought I was leaving everything from the juvenile home behind but reality is that everything that I have learned from the juvenile home I use on the world race, usually daily.

 


 


 Here are the things I learned from the Juvi (and use on the WR):



 


 - Conflict Resolution, I use this daily. – “I feelâ€� Statements. – Check-in Group. – Accept differences of others. – Punching someone in the face is not the answer. – But knowing how to restrain comes in handy. Seriously. – Consequences for choices. – Personal Hour. Everyone needs a little time away from people. – Parties, always a great reward! – Daily cleaning is essential. – It is important to have your clothes and personals neatly on your bed whenever you leave your area. – Shut up and listen. – Laughing at yourself is key. – Calming down technique needs to be used. – We all make mistakes. – Allow others to be fallible. – Prayer always helps, even when the situation seems impossible. – Give people 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 50, 60, 70, 100 chances. – An extra blanket makes all the difference in the world. – Goals are needed to keep focused. – Coloring is something everyone can do and will participate in. – Journaling helps to get your thoughts out and process what is going on. – Hurt people hurt people. – Laughter makes the worst days pass quicker. – You are never done learning. – Affirmation is always needed and wanted. – We all have problems—-move on. – Sundays are welcomed quiet, relaxing days. – It is always good to have people that you trust to check in on you. – Nobody knows where they are going in life. – It is nice and comforting to see a familiar face. – A good team always has your back. – Sometimes its enough to just have a roof over your hear, food, water, and toilet paper to go to the bathroom. – People always act different when the boss comes around. – Reading a good book is easy and cheap entertainment (movies and music too). – It is okay to have a favorite day of the week based on a favorite meal. – Popcorn is a delightful snack. – A phone call home can give you what you need to keep going. – People disappoint you. – There is always someone who doesn’t like you but you have to get along anyways. – Knowing the expectations of you is helpful. – One-on-one time with someone doesn’t happen as much as we want but when it does it is awesome! – Positive comments from your peers are encouraging, fake are always known. – Birthday’s should always be celebrated, no matter where you are at! – Though church people maybe crazy, we know that they have something that we’ve been searching for. – Perception is sometimes more important than reality. – You can’t trust everyone, even though you want to. – People will always come in and out of you life. – Training days are double-sided, welcomed but sometimes boring. – You cant always help what side of the tracks you grew up on but you can help what you do with your life. . – One fruit a day keeps the doctor away. – Chains are uncomfortable and hard in move in. – It’s not what you say but how you say it. – I’m sorry isn’t always enough, but sometimes it is. – Boys always smell, no matter what. – It’s exciting and overwhelming to get mail (email in my case). – Sometimes all we want is to be home. – Children experience too much, too early. We’ve got to let them be kids. – We have to choose in to each day. – Participate in game night, you might win some free candy. – Make the best of every moment. – Hygiene products are worth the money. – Family always knows all your crap, no matter how hard you try to hide it. – Sandals should always be worn around the house and in the shower. – A good pen is hard to come by. – Someone is always watching how you act. – Outings are always eventful. – Taking a break is beneficial to pull yourself together. – There is a scape goat in every group. – Always be friends with the cook!
