Our contacts planned a getaway weekend for us. We went to
Cameron Highlands, The Salad Bowl of Malaysia. We saw pictures and maps of the
place before going; we had high expectation to eat fresh veggies and
strawberries.
The Salad Bowl, you can see the green houses.
We were picked up at our hostel by a young small pastor and
his wife in a 10 passenger van. The door would almost fall off every time you
slid it open and there wasn’t much leg room in the van, but we went with it and
hopped in the van and headed to Cameron Highlands.
It took about three hours to get there. Driving in on windy
roads, we saw lots of green houses and lettuce. Once we started driving into
town, everything was covered in strawberries. There were strawberry statutes,
restaurants, farms, shops, pillows, key chains, balloons, everything you could
imagine strawberry.
Soon after arriving in town, the driver stopped at a small
market. They got out and started walking around, we joined them. I found
strawberry marshmallows and almost died. I love marshmallows so much! Of course
I got some! Then Ally and I found ourselves chowing down to popcorn!
We were laughing when this picture was taken.
We then headed to the apartment we’d be staying at for the
night. Once we put our things down, we scooted off to our next destination.
Which, we never knew what it would be. It
was great because we had our own tour guides, they just couldn’t speak English.
We stopped in the main town. Before we came, our ministry contacts told us
about Lord’s Café. He said “There is a devout Catholic living in Cameron who
opened up a food shop. It’s not open on Sundays and it isn’t open all day,
probably just for lunch. So go there first. So once we stopped in town we
headed for Lord’s Café and were pleased that it was open. There was lots of
great food there like strawberry fruit scones, strawberry and lemon cheesecake,
chicken pie, hash browns, and more. We were so happy!
Then we stopped in the Starbucks because Ally loves it so
much! I took the opportunity to use a nice bathroom. We got back in the car and
went to a Tea Farm. The view was beautiful! There were lots of desserts and
other teas to drink/ eat.

We got into the van once again to drive for another 20
minutes in traffic and park on the side of the road to go to the Night Market.
This was my favorite part! We found
chocolate covered strawberries and marshmallows, corn on the cob, fried sweet
potatoes, and more. I got some souvenirs and enjoyed the food!
Grilled, salted, and buttered corn on the cob!
We went back to the apartment and Shelley and I made our bed
by stacking two mattresses on each other and piling ourselves in covers because
it was so cold. The bed swallowed me, so you couldn’t tell anyone was lying in
it.
The next day we were woken up by someone drilling on the
wall downstairs. We went to town for breakfast and ran into an Indian
restaurant. Please know how much I don’t
like Indian food, but this menu had so many good things on it, we couldn’t
resist. They had great prices too. I got a banana and honey roti, like a
soft crepe, and fried egg and tomato.
We then went to the strawberry farm. There was so much hype
about it on the brochures and road signs. We were excited! You walk up a hill
and into the hydroponic “farm and can pick the strawberries.
The bowl of strawberries and whipped cream, already mixed together, and strawberry hot chocolate. Next to me is Ally’s strawberry sundae.
We headed straight for the food. You could get a salad,
strawberry sundae, strawberry pudding, strawberry hot chocolate, strawberry
cheese cake, strawberry milk shake, strawberry juice, strawberry puff, strawberries
and cream, really anything strawberry you can think of. I went for the
strawberry hot chocolate and strawberries and cream. It was a huge bowl with
sugared strawberries and whipped cream on top, delish!
Shortly after, we headed home. It was a quick stay in
Cameron Highlands, but a good one!
