We visited an elder
lady today for ministry. It was about a 15 minute bus ride and 10 min walk. The
walk was uphill and quite steep, but not bad for us.
The lady was alone.
She began to tell us about her life. Her son is an alcoholic; he leaves during
the day and doesn’t come home until dark. She doesn’t know where he goes and
has no one to take care of her. She’s sick with dizziness and nausea. She can’t
cook for herself and she doesn’t normally have an appetite. She doesn’t have
food or money and can’t go get them anyway; she can’t walk anywhere.
We were all moved by
this woman. Pastor gave her bread and money. She was thankful. We prayed over
her, said our goodbyes and went back home.
Later that evening,
Shelley began to cry for her. The Lord
revealed his compassion over this woman to Shelley.
We were supposed to
go to the schools the next day, but they were closed so we were going to have a
rest day. God had different plans for us instead.
The next day, we
decided to go back and visit this woman, bearing gifts. We didn’t want her to
be lonely again, we wanted her to know someone cared about her.
The buses were not
in service because they were on strike, so we had to walk. It was about 45
minutes to walk there. When we got closer, we bought her cucumbers, bananas,
tomatoes, rice and beans. Things she could eat now and save for later.
When we got to her
house, she wasn’t there. So we waited only a few minutes and there she came,
walking up the hill. She was walking! We asked how she was feeling and she was
so much better.
She was so excited
and confused to see us, but nonetheless invited us in. She gave us wooden
planks/stools to sit on inside the house. Her floor and walls are made of mud,
the ceiling is filled with soot because at one point she built fires inside the
house for cooking.
We just sat with
her, listening to her talk and praise Jesus. Earlier that day, we colored her a
picture and had Samuel write Bible verses in Nepali on it for her to keep. We
gave her the picture and she said she was going to put it where she sleeps.
Then we gave her the food. She didn’t want it at first, but accepted it with
humility. It was almost like she couldn’t believe someone had brought it to
her. We shared that it wasn’t from us, but from the Lord.
She again told us
her story about her son. Then told us how she was much better since we had
come. She had been sick for 8 or 9 months. Now since we had come, she was no
longer dizzy and she ate. She was walking around too!
This month we’ve
been feeling helpless. We haven’t felt like we’re able to do much because
Pastor serves us so.
God showed up at
this woman’s house. He used us to bring church to her. It wasn’t us who healed
her, it was the Lord. We know he will continue to bring his spirit there. We
know her son’s salvation will come.
When we left, she
said, “You’re spirit will remain here.” And I said back, “we’ll
see you in Heaven.” And we will.
