This is our last week here in Gua Musang. It’s our last
night teaching each class and this week is First Aid Week.

Shelley is a nurse, so our ministry contacts deemed it
appropriate to teach each night class, young children to adults, first aid.

Courtney and I have classes at the same time each night with
5-8 years olds and we had planned out some things do for first aid, but we knew
we would mostly improv it. For those of you who do not know what improv is,
it’s making things up on the spot.

We begin class like usual singing Making Melodies, but
instead of singing ‘making melodies in my heart to the King of Kings’ we sing
‘making melodies in my heart with all my heart.’ This is so we don’t give away
to anyone the real reason we are at the community center. Then we went our
separate way to teach class. My kids, three of them, are learning about animals
in their work book.

Shelley, Andrew, and Ally’s First Aid class with Adults.

There are lots of reading and picture books at the center I
was able to use to help learn about animals. There’s a giant book of animals,
Finding Nemo sea creature book, and Explore series books. I usually read them a
story and practice reading out loud with them, then start their workbook. Their
book consists of coloring, writing sentences, filling in blanks, and cross word
puzzles. We take many breaks and play ‘airplane paper’ as they call it.

Today was a little different. We had a short class and got
the two together to learn about First Aid. The center has a first aid kit; we
opened it and began explaining what things were in there. Then we started
talking about washing our hands, teaching the kids how to do it and when to do
it and what it looks like. Then Courtney demonstrated how and all the kids got
to practice too! We taught them how to cough or sneeze in their elbow and not
their hands. We had a skit where Courtney got a cut on her arm, we ran into the
bathroom and showed them how to rinse the blood off with water and bandage it.
We drew a large cut on my arm and showed them how to stitch it up with a
marker.

Family photo with a kid we used to homes chool and is now moving to Canada. May God continue to resonate in his spirit as his parents are not Christ Followers.

Courtney also put the end of a pencil on sticky tack and stuck
it to her arm. We are so creative! We wanted to demonstrate what to do it you
get a foreign object stuck inside you, so we thought a pencil would be the most
relative. We had another skit where Courtney broke her leg playing bad mitten
with me. The kids made great sounds for the ambulances.

We also showed them what to do if someone is choking. They
did it on each other. Our last subject was scissors. We never run with
scissors, right?! Courtney demonstrated running with scissors and said, ‘NO!
Then showed everyone how to carry them and had other kids demonstrate. One
grabbed the scissors and took off running with them, charging at the door. It
was actually really funny and I had a hard time not laughing, but saying no.

Overall, the First Aid Week Day One went well. We believe
these kids will remember how to use a band aid, how to wash their hands, and
how to walk with scissors.
