These next two days we are having a conference at the
church. They have the conference every month for 10 months for pastors to learn
how to plant churches. There is worship and Bible teaching and training.
According to Samuel, we don’t have ministry during this time.
However, we decided our ministry is cutting food, helping prepare meals,
washing dishes, and whatever else we can do to help out. I personally am
keeping the toilets clean; which just means splashing water on the squatty
potty so dirt from shoes won’t stay on the potty.
It’s kind of funny to help cook and seeing what really
happens inside their kitchens. Whenever we eat, sometimes we bite down on dirt.
Its gritty rock sand and we have no idea where is comes from or how it could
get in the food.
So now we’re cooking outside under the tarp since there are
so many people here for the conference. They rub mud all over the outside of
their pots so when it cooks on the fire the pot doesn’t burn. They wash the
potatoes from shower water. They cut the vegetables in their hands (which I
tried and cannot figure out how to do that without cutting myself). And they
cut/peel vegetables on the ground. These are all liable sources for the dirt in
the food.
They cooked a big pot of rice. Then potatoes, cauliflower,
ginger, garlic, tomato, green chili pepper, and onion curry. Then some corn
soup stuff that I watched them make today and there is no corn in it and I
can’t figure out what it is.
They have few spices. I think there is cumin and cayenne
pepper mixed together, a tub of salt, and curry powder kept in a peanut butter
jar. (Where did they get the peanut butter jar? That means peanut butter is
around here somewhere and I haven’t found it yet.)
There are people here from hours away, most probably hiked
here. I feel bad for them, but I guess they are used to it.
The other week we got some cookies for a special treat. We
got strawberry cookies, ones that looked like Chips Ahoy on the packages and
then some Oreo. But when we opened the Oreo we were so confused because they
didn’t look anything like the package said…
