How do you really prepare for a journey like this???

11 months. Jumping from country to country. Living out of a backpack. Eating strange foods. Hearing sooooo many different languages. Sometimes sleeping on floors. Hand-washing clothes. Taking bucket showers. Using the bathroom in a hole in the ground. Dwelling and working with 7-8 people 24/7 that you've never met in your life. Away from my family. Away from my comforts. Developing relationships with locals and having to leave them in a month. So let me ask again…

How do you prepare for a journey like this???

I really don't think this question can be answered. Of course I can take all the precautions of basic preparation…

– Reading up on the different cultures/countries
-Try some new foods
-Start living in a tent in my backyard
– Hand-wash ALL of my clothes
-Immerse myself in a certain section of town where all that's spoken in Spanish
-Take showers in the rain or with the garden hose
-Get my huge list of required shots

This all sounds like complete craziness right? I don't think I can prepare myself for what I am to face. I don't think I can expect anything for sure. I can do this entire list of things and more, but it probably just comes down to experiencing the journey first-hand.

I can look to other people that I'm supposed to go on this journey with and think. Wow, they are so much more prepared than I am. Then I have to think back and know that since this is something that God has called me to do, I have to trust him and know that he has prepared me already. He knows what I am capable of, even more so than I do.

So while trying to ready myself beforehand can be a good thing, it can also teach me to have expections. For this trip, I don't want to expect anything. I want God to blow my mind with what he has planned. I'm not saying that I won't do some majoring studying before I leave…but I won't be thinking I'm ready for anything after I do all those things.

So let's present the question one last time…

How do you prepare for a journey like this???

You really can't. All you can do is trust God, and he will direct your steps. Expect the unexpected!
