Sunday: We make sure breakfast is ready for the squad at 7, have devos at 7, then eat breakfast at 8. Around 8:45 we leave for the monastery where we teach English to students, ages 4-14. We teach from 9 to 11 and then have lunch – which we have learned to embrace after they sat three fish heads on our table for us to eat. We have a break from teaching for a couple hours and can usually go explore a new coffee shop. At 1, we start teaching again until 3. After the day of teaching we head back home and have free time until team dinner.
Monday: Mondays are our Sabbath day, so we just have a day off to rest and sit with the Lord.
Tuesday: We split up on Tuesdays. Me, Lilly, and Merrill babysit the Fjelstad twins all day, meanwhile, Amy, Brittany, Hannah, and Sky work around the hostel
Wednesday: We go shopping for breakfast for the squad. This consists of a trip to macro and the market. Macro is similar to SAMs or COSCO back in the states, so this is where we can buy everything in bulk to feed the squad. The fruit market is definitely an interesting place. I love seeing the different fruits and spices Thailand has to offer. The second have of the day is spent working around the hostel.
Thursday: Some of us babysit while the others do work around the hostel.
Friday: This is our teaching day. We have teaching time until 3 or 3:30 and then we are free until team dinner.
Saturday: This is our adventure day! Saturdays are full of exploring climbing waterfalls, seeing elephants, cliff jumping, coffee shops, and naps.
What free time usually consists of:
- Exploring new coffee shops – definitely a favorite of mine.
- Doing laundry – a close second favorite.
- Night markets
- Meeting new Thai friends
- Finding new fun spots in Chiang Mai
Between making breakfast for everyone, painting hostels, and climbing waterfalls, life here is amazing and exciting. Though we have our “set schedule”, anything could change at any minute. One thing you learn on the race is to be flexible and willing to go with the flow. 🙂
