Today I was sitting by a small body of water in China. I had my bible out reading and could see mountains so clear and so close. There were white windmills located everywhere around me. There were boats sitting by handmade docks and a fishermen chopping fish right off the back of his small metal boat. I sat in the silence of the wind. Allowing myself to breathe in his presence. It was so refreshing and peaceful. Then the Lord hit me with something that made me think. When looking right in front of me I see a large solar windmill. It is completely stopped even though there is an abundance of wind around. I thought it was odd because all the other windmills were definitely moving. I began to notice that this one specific windmill was facing the opposite direction of the rest. We are like windmills….. and here is why: I began to think about my life and how I am like a windmill. When choosing the way of the wind I was quick and continuous. When facing the opposite direction and pursuing God’s plan for me I was slower and stood out. Why does it feel like when things are going the direction we want – it is so quick and continuously moving. I mean we never stop. Just like a windmill facing the direction of the wind. I mean our hair even blows the way we want it. It’s not messy. We literally go with the wind. But when things aren’t going the direction we chose, it is slower and stops from time to time. Just like a windmill facing the opposite direction. When we choose to follow the Lord we give him control of our windmill. We are slower to speak and quicker to listen. We hear Gods voice and allow him to guide us. We stop when he wants us to stop. I feel like that is what the Lord wants for us. We are so quick to do what we want. We continuously move and try to get there to reach that next deadline or goal.  We want the next best thing. But when we listen to God and let him lead, it is slow, easy to hear and stops just enough to let us breathe and reflect on what he is doing. The stopped windmill caught my attention because it stood out from the rest. The Lord calls us to standout. To glorify him with honor and praise. So, what if we are like windmills? When facing the wind we are quick and always moving, or reaching the next best thing. But what happens if we go against the wind? If we face the other way and standout. We are slow or stopped and sometimes that may mess our hair up or cause some bumps along the way. So what!?! I’d rather face the other way and have it be messy than look like all the rest. God is so much bigger than our windmills so why not let him give it a whirl?
