We spend a LOT of time on buses and trains. A lot. And with that I’m usually limited to the music on my iPod. I’ve listened to two albums more times than I can count: Reputation by Taylor Swift and The Thrill of it All by Sam Smith. I love almost every song on these two albums. Favorites: Palace and Midnight Train by Sam Smith and …Ready For It? and Don’t Blame Me by Taylor Swift.
Also, if we’re talking about songs that will always bring me back to the Race, Kiss by Prince probably tops the list. Why? My teammate Heidi plays/sings this song multiple times a day. (I know you’re reading, Storyteller! 😉 )
One of my new favorites is So will I by Hillsong. I had heard it before but not listened to it closely until my team went to a service at Hillsong Church in Bali. They sang the words in Indonesian (Bahasa) and had subtitles in English. And somewhere in between trying to sound out the words so I could sing in Bahasa, I realised for the first time how beautiful the lyrics actually were as I glanced at the English below. Seriously, go listen to it. I love it.
Another one I’ve been listening to on the Race is What a Beautiful Name by Hillsong. And recently I rediscovered Trust in You by Lauren Daigle. Even though this song more so reminds me of driving to Rita’s last year cause it was always on the radio, I found it relevant to my current state of mind and will probably listen to it more now.
Worship: G Squad Go-to’s
So sometimes it’s hard to find songs that everyone knows and people know how to play. So these are songs that are not necessarily personal favorites, but we sing at worship a lot, so they will always remind me of the Race.
King of my Heart- Bethel (Taylor’s is good too :P)
Reckless Love- Cory Asbury
It is Well- Bethel (of them all, this is my favorite, but we don’t sing it as often)
I feel like I’m missing some, so G-Squad, if you think of any, comment below!
Worship: Foreign Language
“Jero” This is a song we sang in Indonesia, first in Javanese, then in English. The words in English say “I love you Jesus, deep down in my soul. Talk about deep deep. Down down. Deep down in my soul.” We loved it because this song was always so fun to sing. It had hand motions to it and the Javanese was relatively easy to sing along to.
“Mahima” We learned this song in India and sang it a couple times in the villages. I can’t remember what the English meant… Something about the glory of God, I think. It was a really fast paced song, but by the end we had mastered at least one verse and the chorus. 🙂
When you don’t have the words, music comes to the rescue. Thanks, Jesus, for the idea for this blog.
Question of the Blog: What songs will remind you of 2018 (whether because they were your favorite or simply overplayed)?
