Red rover, red rover, send em’ on over. (sprint)
Kicking the snot out of a kickball. (sprint)
100m hurdles. (sprint)
Relay. (sprint)
Volleyball. (sprint)

I’ve never been one to thrive on endurance running.
Actually, thrive is a generous statement.
I actually REALLY freaking hate running.
Hell, I even remember the basketball coach asking me to come to conditioning one time. You know what she made us do? Run until we threw up.

Needless to say, I stuck with volleyball and dropped any desire of becoming a marathon runner.

I loved being quick…and fast…in such a short matter of time. That I could put the power in such a small event. Brush my hands and we’re done.

Fast forward a bit:
5:50am, it comes like a slap to the face on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but these sweet mornings are the days that two friends of mine and I go to the gym to lift.
It’s a way for us to hold one another accountable, tone up, strengthen, and just be healthy in new ways.
One day we found ourselves running on the treadmills to kill time and I noticed something different in my pace.
My cadence was different, my breathing, my strides, and even my thoughts.

You see, I’ve always lived life with the gas pedal to the floor.
Taking pride in knowing I could get the shanked volleyball.
Running the 100m as fast as I could.
On the treadmill, I’m either walking at a 3.0 or sprinting at a 6.5
There is no middle ground here.

And then I stop.
Pouring sweat, red face, winded.
Muscles spent.
I stop.

I immediately heard the Father that day on the treadmill.
“This is how your relationship has been with me. Go. Fast. Stop. Go. Peak. Stop.
When will you continue with steadfastness? With endurance and perseverance?
When will you choose the long road with Me?
Why do you long to rush to ‘get it over with’?

This has been a long 6 years of pursuing an in-depth relationship with the Lord.
And the rush in the sprint take away from savoring the marathon of a lifetime we have together.

Muscles can be built to sustain.
Breathing can be slowed down.
And the treadmill CAN go to 5.0

Enjoy the jog.
