IT’S HAPPENING!!!! On January 4th I will fly to Georgia for a final few days of training then on to South America. Here are a few thoughts summing up the month of December.
The past few weeks have whirled by so quickly and with such intensity I’m certain I will still feel like I’m spinning when I step off this ride and onto the plane bound for Colombia. December has been a month of hurriedly checking things off the to-do list, punching out of work for the last time, peacefully celebrating Christmas with family, sporadically crying, feeling the pressure of not forgetting something, worrying about that pile of stuff in the hallway that needs to be packed, visiting with friends, saying goodbye, giving lots of hugs, making a memory album for my nephews, crying more tears… WOW, it’s been exhausting.
At the beginning of December, I chose to read a chapter of Luke each day finishing on Christmas Eve. It was the perfect anchor for this hectic season. The book begins at Jesus’ birth then follows his life here on earth. He lived unconventionally and was considered reckless & eccentric. What a great reminder that serving the Lord is often unconventional and may seem reckless, but that’s okay. I don’t want to live an ordinary life. Reading Luke this month brought me so much peace as I saw the similarities between what Jesus asked the disciples to do then and what He asked me to do now. He called people to leave their loved ones behind and follow Him, to sell or abandon their possessions, to minister to people they wouldn’t normally associate with, to live nomadically, to build community, to rely on fellow believers, to go and let go, & ultimately to share the good news. THIS IS THE WORLD RACE.
December… the month where my head spins with to-do’s, my eyes weep with sadness, my heart races with anticipation, & above all my anchor holds. Now, go read Luke!!
