One thing I’ve always struggled with is “hearing God’s voice”. I was never really sure what the Lord was saying to me or if I was just trying to make out things I wanted to hear. I didn’t know what He sounded like or if He was ever speaking to me at all. Over this past week I’ve spent many hours with God and it was brought to my attention that He speaks in a whisper and unless you are close to Him, you won’t hear Him.
This trip has consisted of diving into His word and growing closer and closer to Him only to reveal that God is not some far away creature that speaks to us in a “Morgan Freeman” voice. He’s a bestie that stands beside us through every mountain high and valley low. He’s a brother in times of joy and a father in times of struggle. His voice is the same as our own because He lives in us. He LOVES to live in us.
In Acts 9, Saul (soon to be Paul), hears God’s voice for the very first time. Now, Saul was never a man who went half way in anything he did. He was a man of “murderous threats” and dragged Christians to prison up until this point. He even went over one hundred miles away to arrest the Christians in Damascus.
One day, the Lord spoke to Saul and said “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
Saul replied “Who are you Lord?”
He replied, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up and go in to the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
After Saul got up, he could see nothing. It wasn’t until Ananias came three days later and baptized him that he could see again. The Bible says he immediately left his old life of darkness to start spreading the gospel. In Acts 9:28 it says, “So Saul stayed with them (the apostles) and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking B O L D L Y in the name of the Lord.” He continued living in this life of freedom whole heartedly until he died.
We could all be like Saul.
If we quit trying to discern God’s voice from our own and started choosing truth from untruth, God’s love would be spread like wildfire. “The church (body of people who believe in Christ) enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.” -Acts 9:31
This is the earth the Lord has created for us. It is possible if we choose a life of surrender.
Paul did and he continued to live a great life devoted to Christ. It was because he chose to L O V E instead of fight. He chose to spread J O Y instead of darkness. He was breathing L I F E instead of death.
God’s voice is one that lives inside of us. He trusts us enough to decide on our own what His will is. He loves us so much that when we veer of the path He has for us, He is STILL with us!
Knowing God’s voice is being close to Him. The more you know Him, the louder you’ll hear Him. He is there. He is waiting for you to listen.
