On Thursday the girls of shekinah and I got to go to zanzibar for a couple days. Despite my fears I decided to go snorkeling with everyone on Friday. I figured since I could now eat fish that means I’m bigger than them and have noting to worry about… It works in my head haha.
“All day snorkeling” turned out to be 2 hours of snorkeling with 2 hours by boat each way. I had the opportunity to chat with some very interesting people on the boat ride so that was sweet. On the way we also saw quite a few dolphins!Part of me wishes I had jumped out and gone for a swim with them. It was pointed out that the dolphins were a darker color than the ones that are in our oceans and someone else said, “makes sense since we`re in Africa.”
As we got closer and closer to our destination island I grew anxious. Me and oceans don’t usually like each other. The only exception for this ocean was the fact that it was in Zanzibar and it was clear. We had finally arrived and I was quite hesitant to get out of the boat. In fact I debated not getting out at all. And then I just jumped out without another thought. I grabbed on to the rope that was anchoring our boat in place and held on to it as if my life depended on it. I didn`t have any plans of letting go but Logan convinced me to swim towards her.
I really didn`t know if I wanted to see what was in the water.. but then I wondered why I went snorkeling in the first place cause isn`t that the point? Against the better judgement of my friends I swam back to the boat and got myself a life jacket. At this point I didn’t even care if I looked like a fool, I felt way safer. Okay so I was swimming back to Logan and Britt when Alissa tries to convince us that she got bit by a fish on her back. Now everyone was up in arms and I became a human life raft for brittany and Logan to cling to.
A bunch of workers came with us and were just hanging out on the boat and I can imagine what they were all thinking when they saw us clumped together with looks of sheer terror on our faces. Logan was brave enough to look down a little and encouraged me to “Awwe, look at the little fishies!” Finally one of the guys swam over to us and brought a life jacket for Britt and Logs to hold onto. He had attached a couple strings onto the life jacket and I held onto one and he pulled us along with the other. Knowing that if something came to get me I’d have a better chance of surviving with a professional around I started to slow my breathing.
When I found the courage to peek under the surf what a sight my eyes beheld. I could hardly believe my eyes and wondered if I was just watching it on tv. But then I felt a zeebra fish wiggle against my body and I was brought into reality. It was almsot like swimming in a giant fish tank at the aquarium. I saw Dory and Scar from Finding Nemo but ironically enough we couldn’t find Nemo. Hm. We also saw purple and white starfish, trumpet fish and my favorite a neon green and purple fish. I’m pretty sure I also saw a cat fish!
To end our snorkeling time I jumped off the top of the boat into the clear water 🙂 Then we headed off to lunch on a different island. (If we stepped foot on the other island we would be shot :S ) Our lunch consisted of rice, some kind of sauce with potatoes in it, pineapple and tuna fish that was baked with fresh ginger. It was delish! Once fed we made our way back to our bungalo, I think it took us 3 hours on the way back cause it was so slow. We also saw lots more dolphins and Alissa and I layed up top on the sun deck 🙂 What a lovely day!
