This month we have been planting sod, working on building a house, visting prisoners in jail, I even got to help with Unlimited Potential International with some of their Baseball clinics for youth, but my favorite job has been working in the orphanage. I have a heart for children, even since I can remember. But recently, since this trip, I have had my heart softened for orphans. Sometimes, I get so frustrated with the toddlers that are constantly crying for their houseparents. I get annoyed when I have to hold a fussy baby through a nebulizer treatment for the 7th time that week, because their asthma is so bad. These things can be difficult, but I think that I would get sick a lot of new people were coming to take care of me all the time. It would be sad for me to not have a consistent parent to comfort and soothe me always. I am so grateful that there are willing people to work here and care for these children, but how much better would their upbringing be if they each had parents, a home, consistency in routine and access to most things we in the States call “necessities”?
I pray that God will bless me to be able to adopt later on in life. And I pray that if you are reading this, you will dig into the Word to see what the Bible really says about our responsibilites about orphans. Surprisingly, it says a lot about how we should care for them and love them. These are some beautiful, amazing, loving and lively children here. All they want is more love. That is something we are all capable of.
It has been such a joy to be here all month long seeing the kids warm up to us more. To see how their faces light up when they see us coming near. To know that when we first got here, one of the baby girls was crawling everywhere, and now she loves to walk using our hands to guide her. Even the baby boy is more comfortable standing up! It has been a blessing to see the growth in them, even in the short time of us being here. I pray that they will grow into mature, God loving children and then adults.
Hebrews 5:13-14
For everyone who partakes
only of milk is not accustomed
to the word of righteousness,
for he is an infant.
But solid food is for the mature,
who because of practice
have their senses trained
to discern good and evil.
