I found $5 on the ground today.
That must mean that Jesus loves me.
I got a cup of coffee from Starbucks on the house today.
That must mean that Jesus loves me.
I locked my keys in the car today.
That must mean that Jesus doesn’t love me.
Talk about some messed up logic. And yet, if you really pay attention, we say this kind of stuff all the time! We are belittling our God to a crippling conditional love at the drop of a hat. Most of you reading this right now might not even realize that you do this, let alone how often you do it. It has become one of those cute little sayings we col Christians like to throw around. “Oh man, today was so much fun! Jesus must love me. :]” or “look at that wonderful sunset! Jesus must love me so much to send me that” or even “awesome! free upgrade to first class for this long flight! Thanks Jesus! You must love me a lot!”
How did we stray so far from humbly thanking God for everything in every circumstance, to equating good things to amount to His love for us? In no way is this a post to say that Jesus DOESN’T love you. My point couldn’t be more opposite, in fact.
Maybe you should take a second and free yourself of that pressure. Maybe Jesus loves you and it has nothing to do with that extra scoop of free ice cream you got, or the discount on your car repair, or the colorful sunrise this morning. PRAISE GOD that His love has nothing to do with me. It has nothing to do with what I do or don’t do. Maybe I should just accept the fact that God loves me, Jesus died for me and the Holy Spirit is within me because God loves me in spite of myself. Through all of my mistakes, failures and shortcomings, I am loved. And its just that simple.
Jesus loves me this I know.
And He showers me with blessings. With a sunny day, free froyo and great friends.
And then on the difficult days. With the thunderstorms, expensive car problems, and a broken heart…
Jesus loves me this I know.
