Spending the holidays away from home is not a new concept for me. I’ve never been away from home for Christmas before, but I have been away from home for Thanksgiving and New Years. Since my family celebrates Thanksgiving at my house, that hits more close to home than Christmas does at times. Christmas stresses me out anyway. I’m not trying to be a grinch, but part of me really dreads Christmas time mainly because of all the pressure and routines associated with it. Regardless, I still did not know what it would feel like to not be around my family for Christmas.
Surprisingly, it felt like any other day. There was no stress, no routine and completely fitting for me.

The beautiful thing about being in South Africa for Christmas is that it does not remind you in any way whatsoever of Christmas back in the States. For starters, it’s close to 70 degrees outside. I spent all day Christmas Eve on the beach and got to see a genuine South African Christmas parade…complete with elephant statues!

I also did not have to worry about buying a single Christmas present for anyone (although I have picked up a few souvenirs along the way). I also did not have to worry about finals for the first time (which, sadly, I do also associate with Christmas break)

The three teams that are here decided that we would do a lighthearted “white elephant” gift exchange….which was the most hilarious gift exchange I have ever been a part of. We also had a LARGE Christmas dinner (a.k.a the most food I have eaten in one night while on the race) and concluded Christmas with a candlelight service, which was more beautiful and moving than any service I have ever participated in at my parent’s church or any service I have been to period. No pressure, no routine, no worries. Just a beautiful day to spend with my family here.
