When in Nepal…

  • It is not uncommon to be greeted by kids with the question “chocolate?”
  • Traffic jams are still not fun, but at least you are able to purchase peanuts, oranges and popcorn outside the car window.
  • The culture is what we would consider super “hipster”.
  • There are restaurants where you don’t wear shoes and sit on the ground on pillows.
  • If you want to ride in style around town, Rikshas, which are bikes with carriages in the back, are your best option in Kathmandu.
  • Women from Tibet sell handicrafts all along the streets to support their families.
  • If it is clear out you can have a beautiful view of the Himalayas right outside your home.
  • It may not be as cold as home, but there is no heat in the homes.
  • You may go the entire month with only ice cold showers.
  • 4-6 hour drives can easily turn into 10 hours.
  • Patagonia and The North Face are the cool brands, except their coats are only about $15-$20 here.
  • You will fall in love with a drink called Masala Tea.
  • “Namaste” is how you say hello and good bye.
  • On a small food budget you will most likely spend your days consuming 50 cent danishes and $1.50 chowmeins.
  • Rather than slowing down for turns on roads with large cliff drops on the side you just honk your horn as many times as possible.
  • You may decide to rent a scooter for just $5 and learn how to drive it.
  • A giant yak wool scarf is the way to go for warmth.
  • You will always opt to walk the mile rather than take a taxi.
