Today, Martha and I went to a coffee shop with some of the University students.

We had some good conversation about different English words, different hobbies, movies and books. We went from books into talking about the Bible. One of the boys that we were with had some questions about faith and the Bible. We had some good conversation this morning. He had a few questions, but the one that I want to talk about is when he wanted us to talk about the sixth commandment. Thou shalt not kill. “But am confuse when is said that hate is like kill”

I was STUMPED.

I didn’t know what to say. How do I explain to him something that I didn’t understand all the way myself?

And then,

God just fed into me a way to address him. It was so clear and evident what He wanted me to say, I just started LAUGHING.

The ten commandments is the law. Jesus came and now there is a new law. A sin is a sin is a sin. They are all equal in His eyes. They all hurt our Father.

One perspective of Him saying that about hate is to show that we are all sinners.

A person could go his whole life without physically killing someone- and they could think that they are good. They kept the commandment. They are not sinful.

The fact is, they are not. We are all sinners.

If Jesus equates hate in a person’s heart to murdering someone then it SHOWS that we are all sinners.

That person that could go their whole life without physically murdering can’t go through life without hating someone. And if hating someone is to ‘murder’ them, then they obviously haven’t kept all of the commandments.

So, one perspective of Him coming and giving the new law is to show EVERYONE that they are sinners and that the ENTIRE world needs Him!

He also asked about purgatory because his preacher said that if you have a few sins, you would go to purgatory so that your family could get you to Heaven.

But the new law displaces that theory as soon as it tries to cross the thresh hold!

Because,

if just to HATE a person is like MURDERING them (command 6)

and

if just to LOOK at a person with lustful thoughts is to COMMIT ADULTERY (command 7)

then that is just TWO commandments and a TON TON TON of sin!

HENCE, displacing the idea that a person could have just FEW SINS!

wow.

That kind of puts my sin and His love into perspective for me.

I’ve obviously committed SO many sins, EACH DAY!

It just makes His utter, complete and thorough love that much more special and amazing!
