So, it all started with a simple line in a song.
“Spirit, lead me where my trust is without borders.”
This one line, actually the first word in the line, led me to explore something that I had never really delved into—this crazy concept of the Holy Spirit.
Throughout my life, when I thought about God, I always thought about God the Father. Then when someone said Christ, I thought about Jesus, the Son. I knew about the Trinitarian belief of our faith, but the idea of the Holy Spirit was just one that I had never really given much thought. We are taught to pray the “Our Father” as children as the fundamental prayer of our religion; we have an entire season dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ, and then another season dedicated to His death and Resurrection. So, I fully understand where I was coming from 6 months ago, never really having put much time, thought, or prayer into this crazy concept of the Holy Spirit.
Then this song came around and moved my heart in a crazy way. Once I began to really feel these words in my soul, I knew that I was missing something amazing in this “Spirit” that we talk about. As often happens with big realizations, I noticed the Holy Spirit everywhere – sermons, conversations with friends, and things that I read.
I certainly have a long way to go in this quest to discover the Spirit of God, but this is what I have come up with so far: The Holy Spirit is our living and daily way of communicating and experiencing God’s presence. If God the Father is the Creator, Jesus the Son is the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit is the Sustainer, isn’t the Holy Spirit the key to maintaining any sort of relationship or holiness in life? It seems like we all seek to be sustained.
We long to be filled by God, for Him to come into our hearts, and the way He does that is through His Holy Spirit. If we were created, redeemed, but not sustained, how would we live as Christians?
As for me, I need to focus on the way that the Spirit sustains my life.
All of that aside, this is my Prayer:
I can’t do this without You, Spirit. On days that my human spirit is simply not enough, lead me. Enter my soul and breathe into my life so that wherever I go, I may feel Your presence. With your gentle guidance and comfort, may I respond to this call on my heart to “go” with the same peace, energy, and wisdom that the disciples experienced many years ago.
P.S. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for the spiritual, emotional, and financial
support that I have received. I will be posting a fundraising update and gear registry soon 🙂
