We finally got to our first ministry site. Because of the tropical storm here in Gautemala there have been a lot of roads that have been completely washed out. We were delayed one day from getting to Los Robles but we found the ride to be an awakening to the fact that we weren’t in America anymore.
We took a van from Antigua to Las Trapes where we were all dropped off in the middle of the “freeway.” It was a site to see all of us Americans carrying our huge packs across the other lanes of the “freeway.” This is where you might ask, “Why did the Americans cross the road?” The answer was “to avoid getting hit, to get out of the pouring rain, and to find cell phone minutes.”
While we were standing there waiting for another bus to come save us, another interesting fact came up. Due to the pouring rain there were limited busses going the way we were headed. So being the great problems solvers we are, we asked a guy who had a pick up truck if we could pay him to take us to Los Robles.
Yeah that was even funnier site. All of us piling in the back of the pick up truck with our packs driving through mud, rain and washed out roads. Sitting there, in the rain, holding on to the truck and my pack, which contains all my belongs for these next 11 months is where it felt real. I wasn’t in America anymore. I wasn’t able to rely on structure or safety or convince, I had to rely on my teammates, this truck and God to get me through it.
To think, this is just the beginning of the stories. The beginning of the abondonment. The beginninging of God teaching me so many lessons. I can’t wait for more
