We make many babies cry.  We are constantly stared at, as if we’re somehow mesmerizing.  We sell out events.  We’re the most desired guest in town.

It’s all because we’re white.  And big (well…we’re big compared to Cambodians.)

It happens when you go to a village that may have never seen white people before.  That’s exactly where we spent our second week in Cambodia.  We piled in a van and drove 2 hours out of the city, an hour of which was spent on dirt roads through the villages.

When we arrived we were told to arrange a VBS program that would start in 15 minutes.  After that we had about 30 min to arrange a 2 hour class/Bible study for married women and mothers (of which we are neither!)  About 50-60 women showed up.  Woah, ok…we were a little unsure of what was going on, but thankfully there is the Holy Spirit to lead us and tell us what to share!  We found out after class that most of the women weren’t Christians and didn’t usually come.  They just came to check out the white people.  Our entire week continued like this.

That was followed by a 2 hour youth group.  We had an hour break for dinner.  This is when the village found out that a few of us LOVE mushrooms.  Guess what we ate the rest of the week!  Our schedule then continued with an hour of English class and an hour long prayer meeting.  That was day 1.  Days 2-5 were quite similar.  12 hours a day of leading classes, cell groups, and studies.

My resume can now include phrases such as English teacher, leadership training, women’s studies, VBS, youth group, cell group leader, worship leader training, and preacher.  However, being busy and on short notice taught me a lot about being lead by the Spirit.  Since we were busy all day, and I felt ill-qualified at times, I had to turn to the Holy Spirit for help.  I didn’t know what to say.  I didn’t know what to do at times.  Thankfully all I had to do was ask the Holy Spirit, and he faithfully responded every time with exactly what he wanted his children to hear.  Awesome!

We continued to see houses smaller than your living room packed out with 30 people, most of who didn’t know Christ.  Who knew the color of our skin could be such a great ministry tool!  We were able to share about Christ’s love, his faithfulness, his healing, and his salvation all thanks to our freckles and blonde hair.

2 Amazing Stories:

We saw a lame woman healed.
We spent a morning visiting people in the village and praying for them.  We met a beautiful 80 year old woman who could not walk due to back pain.  The first time we prayed for her she felt cool on the top of her head.  So we prayed again.  As we left she walked out to the road to say goodbye.  The villagers with us were stunned that she was walking.  Absolutely stunned.  That’s Jesus!

We saw 2 people accept Christ.  One woman came up for prayer at church while we were praying for a deaf teenager.  She said she wanted to know Christ and his peace.  She prayed for salvation.  During our morning walk around the village we prayed for a 70 year old man with cancer.  At first he wanted to be healed before he would accept Christ.  After praying for him he said he felt the Lord’s presence and wanted to accept Christ, so he did!  Jesus is amazing!

Village life did have some quirks…like sharing the bathroom with a tarantula, bucket showers, millions of mosquitoes, and babies that cried every time they saw our white skin.  However, God is redeeming Cambodia.  6 years ago this church had 6 members who’s lives were often threatened.  Now they have over 100, and they’re seeing people come to Christ regularly.  Go Jesus!
