Month 1 Wrap-Up & Why We Leave A Place Better Than We Have Found It!

Through a little mistake we are actually flying out a week later as planned and were able to continue to stay at the hostel.

Whenever I have free time, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, I just want to relax, I don’t need to necessarily talk to people and basically all I want to do is watch Netflix and sleep.

I was challenged by C.S. Lewis that wherever we go, we can have an impact on people and helping that place to become better.

In the fifth book of the Chronicles of Narnia “The Voyage of the Dawntreader” C.S. Lewis writes, “The huge single foot of a Monopod acted as a natural raft or boat, and when Repicheep had taught them how to cut rude paddles for themselves, they all paddled around the bay and round the Dawn Treader, looking for all the world like a fleet of little canoes with a fat dwarf standing up in the extreme stern of each.” (p.185-186)

If you do not know the books then you won’t really understand the context much, I just wanted to show you that after Lucy and the others have been on the Island, they are leaving the Island a better place, showing those Monopod’s that they can have a wonderful life, full of enjoyment and fun. They are not changing the people, they are bringing light to them. Repicheep taught those Monopods how to use the circumstances that they are in and to enjoy themselves in the water, without being afraid of the water.

Now please don’t get me wrong. The place before was not worse. Many of my family members have voiced the concern and asked me if I am going into indigenous cultures and will I change their culture. No. We will not. However what we will do is bring the light.

We do not change the people, or their cultures that are far older than my parents, grandparents and me together. But we will bring light.

Matthew 5:14-16 says

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (ESV)

We are bringing light to other cultures, to other countries. Some share the same light already in those countries, but why should we hide a light, that is so radiant, so consuming, so warm and wonderful?

And so we take little steps, like cleaning up the kitchen of the hostel even better than it was before we started cooking. We will not get seconds, but give food to staff who haven’t eaten dinner yet, we will show them a smile and be polite. It’s little things, that one can even show while having downtime. It’s not much of an effort, but serving others can go a long ways.

My family sometimes kind of makes fun of me, because I always want to have people over, or I’m out seeing my friends. But I just love hanging out with people and getting to know them!

But we are supposed to count others more significant than us selves (Philippians 2:3). I am on this earth to serve others selflessly, to build the church. Not a building, but a living, breathing community that loves God and brings light to all of the world!

So that is what I’ll be doing for the next months and Lord willingly for the rest of my life!

Thank you to all the people who have supported me, so I am able to embark on this journey and to have the honor of spreading that light everywhere.

Debrief war so schön. Wir hatten ein paar tolle Tage um uns in einem wundervollen Hostel zu entspannen. Durch einen kleinen Fehler fliegen wir eine Woche später als geplant und wir durften in dieser Zeit in dem Hostel bleiben.

Wannimmer ich Freizeit habe, und ich denke ich bin nicht die einzige der es manchmal so geht, möchte ich mich einfach nur entspannen, ich möchte nicht unbedingt mit vielen Menschen reden und wirklich einfach nur Netflix schauen und schlafen.

Ich wurde von C.S. Lewis herausgefordert dass, wo immer wir hingehen, das wir eine Auswirkung auf andere haben und die Möglichkeit haben den Ort ein kleines bisschen besser zu hinterlassen.

Wenn ihr die Bücherreihe nicht gelesen habt, macht dass hier nicht so viel Sinn, ich wollte euch nur zeigen dass nachdem Lucy und die anderen auf der Insel ankamen, sie die Insel besser hinterlassen haben, indem sie den Monopod’s gezeigt haben dass sie ein wundervolles Leben, voll mit Freude und Spaß haben können. Sie verändern die Leute nicht, sie bringen Licht. Repicheep hat den Monopod’s beigebracht mit ihrer Situation um zu gehen und ihnen gezeigt wie viel Spaß sie dadurch haben können im Wasser ohne Angst vor dem Wasser zu haben.

Versteht mich nicht falsch. Der Ort war nicht schrecklich bevor wir hier her kamen. Ein paar Mitglieder meiner Familie hatten die Sorge und fragten mich ob, wenn wir in indigene Kulturen leben, diese Kultur verändern werden. Nein. Werden wir nicht. Was wir jedoch tun werden ist ein Licht in diese Kulturen bringen.

Wir werden die Menschen nicht verändern, in der Tat können wir das garnicht. Wir können nicht einfach in Kulturen reingehen und versuchen Jahrhundert alte Kulturen zu verändern. Aber wir werden das Licht bringen.

Matthäus 5:14-16 sagt

“Ihr seid das Licht, das die Welt erhellt. Eine Stadt, die hoch auf dem Berg liegt, kann nicht verborgen bleiben. Man zündet ja auch keine Öllampe an und stellt sie unter einen Eimer. Im Gegenteil: Man stellt sie so auf, dass sie allen im Haus Licht gibt. Genauso soll euer Licht vor allen Menschen leuchten. Sie werden eure guten Taten sehen und euren Vater im Himmel dafür loben.” (HFA)

Wir bringen das Licht in andere Kulturen, in andere Länder. Manche teilen schon das Licht mit uns in diesen Ländern, aber warum sollen wir dieses Licht verstecken, dieses Licht das so strahlt, so konsumierend, so warm und wundervoll ist?

Und somit gehen wir kleine Schritte, wie z.B. die Küche des Hostels so aufräumen, dass es noch sauberer ist als bevor ich angefangen haben zu kochen. Wenn wir essen übrig haben, essen wir es nicht selbst auf, sondern bieten es den Angestellten des Hostels an, die noch kein Abend gegessen haben. Wir sind höflich und lächeln sie an. Es sind kleine Sachen, die man aber auch in einer Zeit der Entspannung zeigen kann. Es ist kein großer Akt, aber jemand anderen zu dienen kann weit gehen.

Es ist schon ein running gag in meiner Familie geworden dass ich immer Freunde zu Hause einlade oder sonst immer unterwegs mit Freunden bin. Ich habe es so gern mich mit anderen Menschen zu unterhalten und diese kennen zu lernen.

Wir sollen andere mehr wertschätzen als uns selbst (Philipper 2:3). Ich bin hier auf der Erde um anderen selbstlos zu dienen, um die Gemeinde auf zu bauen. Kein Gebäude, sondern eine lebendige, atmende Gemeinschaft, die Gott liebt und das Licht in alle Welt verbreitet.

Also, das werde ich für die nächsten paar Monate tun und hoffentlich für den Rest meines Lebens!
