It’s hard to believe that we have already been in Guatemala for a month! Guatemala is such a beautiful country, the volcanoes, mountains and greenery never fail to take my breath away. Our team is currently working with a school in a little city about an hour north of the capitol called San Raymundo. The school is called Morning Glory Christian Academy and is run by an amazing woman named Lori. The first week that we were here we were just hanging out at the school and acclimating to the new culture. The school is nothing at all like schools in America, I swear there is always loud music coming from somewhere and the kindergartners are never in class. This school already has teachers for every class and a system that works, it has been a little awkward to try and find a place for 7 giant American teenagers (Guatemalans are very short people and our team’s average hight is 6′)
During school we have just been hanging out with the kids in between classes and helping teach Bible class. It has been kind of a struggle to see what we are adding to the school and how we are fulfilling the mission we set out with. We only hangout with the kids for an hour or two each day, and in Bible class we still need a translator to help get our message across. Many days we leave ministry feeling like a burden to our hosts, and to the school.
One of the Bible lessons we taught was about Joseph, the one who’s brothers sold him into slavery because they were jealous of his coat of many colors. After teaching a simplified version in skit form to the kids, I went back and read the original. During the part while Joseph was in prison one of the verses really stuck out:
“The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s charge, because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the lord made is succeed” Genesis 39:23
In our ministry it is easy to feel like we are insignificant or we aren’t adding anything. But in everything we are doing, we are doing it with the Lord. Because the Lord is with us, we WILL NOT fail. The fruits may not be obvious, or immediate, but they will be there because the Lord is with us. We may never see the fruits, but we know that our efforts are not in vain because the Lord is with us. Even though we may feel insignificant, God has a greater purpose and a greater plan, and if this whole trip was just to love on one kid, it would be worth it.
Fundraising Update:
I am only $1,000 away from being fully-funded! I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has helped me get this far, God is doing big things in Guatemala (even though they seem very small)!
