Limes are everywhere here.

And Dominicans use them for everything….

juices, cleaning chicken, in all sauces, on vegetables, even for killing germs in toilets.

I like just eating them.

They are perfect the blend of sweet and sour.

In the midst of squeezing limes, I’m finding life here in Padre Las Casas.

I honestly love it here.
Somehow it has been restful.
It’s not that we aren’t busy, rather there is a peace in the atmosphere here. There is a lightness, a freedom in the air that invites my soul to rest.
It’s hard to explain, but everything feels right.

Perhaps it is the work we are doing…
There is something so satisfying about working with your hands all day- making meals, scrubbing dishes, chasing children, mopping floors. At the end of the day my body is tired, but my soul is alive.

Perhaps it’s the lifestyle here…walking everywhere, consuming only what is necessary, giving more, making our own food, sitting on our porch all afternoon with the neighbors.

Perhaps it’s the people I’m working alongside… teammates who are lighthearted, encouraging, safe, gentle, forgiving, generous, affirming. Dominican women who are warm, hospitable, joyful and at peace.

While I'm squeezing limes, I forget about everything else.
I forget about what I have to do, who I need to be, what I need to look like, whether or not people like me, what I should achieve, what I am going to do with my future.
In this little kitchen, I just laugh with these Dominican women as we make lime juice for the children.

There is truth in the words that those who seek to lose their life for others and for Christ will find it.

I'm finding life in squeezing limes.
