I just finished washing my face in the river. As I put my face down into the water a school
of fish was staring up at me. We are
staying in Palapa, the same place we came to camp out two weeks ago and where
we had the church service and baptism a week ago. This part of the race is called debrief. It is a time for us to talk to the other
teams to hear about what they experienced, to meet with our own team to talk
things out, and to do some personal reflection.
Yesterday was a play day.
Our motto is work hard, play hard.
Misol Ha is a very tall freestanding waterfall. We spent four hours there swimming, reading,
and relaxing. There is one section of
the waterfall that comes out of a cave in the rock wall. We hiked around to the entrance of the cave
where we put on our headlamps. The water
moving through the cave was anywhere from our ankles to our shoulders. The parts of the cave I explored had a good
bit of clearance above my head; the ceiling was anywhere from ten to fifteen
feet. The main room in the cave was very
open and had a pool of water which was fed by a six foot waterfall pouring out
the wall. We searched around with our
headlamps and found clusters of bats on the ceiling. Two groups were made of close to 25 bats
gathered together. When the light hit
them they squirmed around and some of them eventually swooped down around our
heads.
Last night we finished off the day with an amazing meal
prepared by our local contact Pastor Samuel.
We had chicken cordon bleu, vegetables, and mashed potatoes. Other than BK it was the first American food
I had in a month so I practically licked my plate clean.
The rest of today we are debriefing then we spend the night
in our tents and head for Guatemala tomorrow.
All we know so far is that we can’t arrange anything until 12 pm and we
are headed towards Lake Atitlan. If you
think about it you could pray for good weather while we are tent camping. Actually why don’t you ask for no rain at all
while we are tent camping, that would be great.
The rain just started coming down. Thank you God for a good tent; the outside is
soaked but the inside is dry.
