image2.jpeg1. The Garafina people- The first day we arrived in La Ceiba, Honduras, we drove through a small village on the coast. It was shocking! Not only is it stunningly beautiful, but it is an African village (Honduras is in Central America, people!). We soon discovered that there are more of these villages along the coast and that this people group, called the Garafina, are descendants of the African people that settled here after their slave ship crashed. They have managed to keep their own culture over the years and speak their own language as well as Spanish. I knew from the moment I drove through this village that I wanted to learn more about this people group and return here!

2. Divine Appointment- A week passed and I still didn’t have a chance to return to the Garafina village. I asked a couple people we met with if they knew anything about the Garafina or how I can get in contact with someone there. All my efforts were futile, and I was frustrated! Finally, I gave up. I thought, “it’s just not gonna happen”. And at that point- I gave up, and God showed up! Two of my team mates ran into Dave (coincidence or God appointment!?! You decide.). After they told him about World Race, Dave told them they should meet Dan. And meet Dan we did!

3. Dan’s Vision- Dan is an amazing man of God who has a passion to serve the people in this community through a feeding and sewing program, thrift shop, and supporting this through serving the tourism industry with local food, coffee, pizza, organic garden and a beauty salon. This vision is still in the developing process, but it is beautiful to see how God is bringing this vision into reality!

4. Sambo Creek beach- Sambo Creek is the village we visited, and is the most commonly known Garafina village. Dan’s home is on the beach- a beautiful location. Dave, who I mentioned earlier, is a neighbour to Dan and we also had a great visit with him and his wife. They are a lovely couple, who have decided to retire here and enjoy the peace of this small village. They told us about the culture and showed us a local drum shop. We also enjoyed playing with their monkey- she is the cutest little princess!

5. The children- As always, I took notice of the children as I walked through the village. And yes they are the cutest! Dan took us on a tour and showed us where children’s ministry happens and introduced to the leader. I was so excited to hear about the kids activities that are already in place and to see the potential this place has.

I am so excited to see the future of this place, and looking forward to seeing how the Lord will lead me in the future.

It’s crazy that we are already in Month 10! In less than 2 months, l will be home! Please pray for me that I can remain focused here and not worry about the future.
