ministry :: the act of giving service, care, or aid; attend, as to wants or necessities
I thought I knew what ministry was before I went on the World Race. It was serving in my church’s nursery on Sunday mornings, or helping out with the junior high youth group on Friday nights. I had loved doing both those things and more, so signing up for 9 months of ministry didn’t seem like a big deal. I thought I knew what I was getting into.
Then a whole lot happened last year and the beginning of my World Race turned into three months on AIM’s campus in Gainesville, Georgia. How could we do ministry if we were stuck here the next three months?
The answer is simple, and one that most people at AIM have already heard.
MINISTRY IS LIFE.
LIFE IS MINISTRY.
Yeah, I know that sounds pretty cheesy, but let me explain it a little more. When we look at the life of Jesus, what did ministry look like for Him? It wasn’t just Sunday mornings or Friday nights. Life didn’t get in the way of doing ministry; it was His whole life. He poured out into people everywhere He went. Whether it was a huge crowd of 5,000 or just His closest friends, Jesus loved on people, took the time to listen to their stories, and share the good news of His coming.
So what does that mean for us? Is ministry confined to a church building? Or is it a part of everything we do?
Every conversation we have, the love of Christ should be shining through us. Every person we meet should walk away knowing there was something different about us and the God we serve.
