I have very strong and conflicting feelings about poetry (and songwriting). It’s an art form that has resulted in beautiful, perspective-changing, and influential art. But, I truly dislike it because of all of the varieties and ultimately freedom that is offers. However, I’m appreciative of poetry. Through poetry, the Lord continues to reveal things to me in a way that I can’t refute, even if it’s penned by my own hand.

So for a team time earlier this month, I led my team in rewriting a prayer that King David had written. With the guiding questions of: how do you worship the Lord with your own words? and how do you worship the Lord with others’ words? I asked this because there are some many times throughout history that people used others’ words to worship the Lord. For example, using a psalm to lament or express thanksgiving, or even taking Scripture and creating a worship song from it.

This song of David (II Samuel 22), the first time I read it, moved me. It moved me so much that I wanted to meditate on it a bit longer; to pick it apart and piece it back together; to bring it before the Lord in my own words. But, after a one-on-one with one of our squad leaders, I felt more inclined to lead my team in this, as an act of praise and worship to the Lord.

Ascribe to God the worth that He is due,
Angie

Team Selah’s Song of Praise

(vv.2-7) Stability is in the Lord.

He protects me from evil.

God is always praise-worthy.

Evil surrounds me. I was facing death. I reach to God for help and He heard me.

(vv. 8-16) In the Lord’s anger, the heavens and earth made way.

Steaming rage against the wicked that surround me with harms intent, caused my King to descends from His Throne to fight for me. Disguised as a simple knight covered by night, my Lord comes before my enemies can sense His Presence.

Upon His arrival, however, my knight in shining armour brings light that blinds and scatters the opposing army. At His command, it is made know in all of the heavens and the earth, that my King is God and I am His beloved daughter. No one can hide or escape the wrath of the Father, King, and Holy God.

(vv. 17-25) He came down from on high, scooped me up from dark angry waters, placing me under His wings. He took delight in me. Delighted in the hands raised in hallelujah. Delighted in the eyes fixed upon Him. Delighted in a heart set on His, and rewarded me with His abundant love.

(vv. 26-31) The real You is hard to see when, made in Your Image, I dwell in the looks of sinful me. But when I seek You, I know. You make known Your mercy, Your blamelessness You show. You save us when we’ve found our place at Your feet, and still, You pursue those with knees locked too proud. By Your light, I can see and by Your might, I can do. Your way is without defect, Your Word without promise that is not true. If Protector I see You as Protector You’ll be. I’m safe in Your arms. You say all battles give to me.

(vv. 31-38) For Who is God, but the Creator of the world? Who is as strong and sturdy like our Rock, our God? This God is my safe place in times of trouble, and He has made my life a perfect sacrifice. He sets my feet and secures me in dangerous places. He has prepared me to fight any battle, so that, in Him, no one can prosper against me. You have given me Your Son as a protector, example, and salvation, and You have exalted me with Your love and mercy. You give me ample space to walk about, grow, and learn without threat or danger. You lead me into all victory so that I will lead others and myself to glorify You.

(vv. 39-43) The strength and shield You gave allowed my enemies to fall to my feet. You equip me with all that I need, nothing was left behind. I am ready for battle. My enemies fear me because You gave me the power to destroy them. Cries were made to the Lord but no prayers were answered. Their cries were swept into the depths of the sea, they are enemies no more.

(vv. 44-51) Oh, my Lord, You have made me victorious. People can no longer accuse me. You have preserved my life. You allow me to serve and be served. The Enemy will cringe before me. When the Enemy hears me, he will submit. The Enemy will lose their courage. The Enemy will tremble. Oh, my Lord, You are alive. Praise to You, my Rock, worthy are You to be exalted. You vindicate me before those that try to harm me. You deliver me from all my enemies. You keep me safe, I will praise You my Lord over the nations. I will sing praises to You. You give great victory to Your beloved. You show unfailing love to me. Anoint me with Your precious gifts,  so that I may proclaim Your Name among the nations.
