God speaks to us in the still, small voice. That voice can be heard regardless of where you are or what you are doing. Our time in India is over and trying to reflect and process everything that has happened is difficult. Our team has seen miracles, cast out demons, and lead many people in accepting Jesus Christ into their lives for the first time. Even with all of these incredible things going on around us it’s still possible, even easy at times, to have on spiritual blinders and miss the remarkable beauty of the situation. Ministry in India is difficult sometimes. Every day we would go out to a different village to meet with and pray for the people who lived there. Every day looked different, but generally we would go from house to house praying for whatever was on the hearts of the people who lived there. We would ask them questions, encourage them, get fed by them, pray for them, and if they were not believers we would do our best to share the gospel with them. Some nights after going through town we would run a service and a prayer meeting that would usually last at least three hours.
It sounds very simple, but with the language barrier, cultural differences, team members constantly getting sick, and just plain exhaustion, it’s easy to get sidetracked. Some days everything comes at you so fast that you’re not sure what is going on or if what you’re doing is having any impact whatsoever. Confusion and discouragement can set in and with that can come apathy. At times you find yourself crying out to God asking Him to just tell you something, that if you could just get a word from him then you would be okay, regardless of the situation. The desire to be led clearly by the Spirit is so strong that your entire spirit aches and groans.
And then all of the sudden, in the midst of the chaos both inside and out, peace and rest is found. All it takes is that brief moment for the Holy Spirit to come and remind you with that still small voice that everything rests in God’s hands, and that He will work everything to accomplish His purposes.
This is something that God has been teaching me this month and that I’m sure He will continue to teach me. We don’t always need to understand what is going on, but we do need to obey and have faith, not in what we are capable of, but of the one who sent us. Faith that He who begins good work in His people will see that it is brought to completion. Faith that He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. Faith that gives hope and courage so that even in the midst of utter chaos we can find rest in Him.
