Since I’ve been slow to blog – half because there’s been so much happening/half because we have really limited internet- I’m hoping this will give you a better idea of what life in Busia, Kenya has been for us this past week and a halfish …

(I’ll hopefully get pictures up sometime soon, since the internet is  a bit slower the process of adding them is a bit more difficult so you’ll have to use your imagination for now)

Transportation to Busia, Kenya —-

Flight into Istanbul, Turkey on our way to Nairobi, Kenya – so ridiculous…especially after not sleeping for about 48 hours straight beforehand. So we’ve been on the plane into Istanbul for about 5 hours and we’re now literally about 2 minutes from touching ground when the pilot decides to swoop us back up into the air! Word around the plane was that we were coming in the wrong lane or the wrong direction or something of that nature…no big deal, right? So then, we swoop around and come back in for landing attempt number 2. The wheels do touch the landing strip this time, but it wasn’t exactly the smoothest landing. The plane started jarring back and forth pretty wildly as we held on tight…and then…*exhale*…we made it. We came in late so we had to literally run to our next flight into Nairobi, but we did indeed make it. The next surprise came into play when midway through the flight, the flight attendant started spraying some horrible disinfectant all throughout the plane…mmmm. So anywho, one more spraydown and a couple hours later, we landed safe and sound in Nairobi, Kenya.

The bus ride to Busia, Kenya! – I wish I had recorded our 11 hour bus ride into Busia…or at least 5 minutes of it. The scenery was exactly what you would expect driving through the beautiful wildlife that is Kenya and the bumpiness had us all flying out of our seats every few minutes all while trying to get some extra z’s. Ridiculous haha

Home Sweet Home in Busia, Kenya (which is a 20 minute walk away from the border into Uganda) —–

Steve and Reverend Gideon from Deliverance Church – Our amazing ministry contacts for this month!

Chef Lucas – the most amazing, joyful man that makes the most delicious food ever! J

Pancakes and Chipote’s made by Chef Lucas– we request these as often as possible. They both taste pretty similar to crepe’s…mmm !!!!

Killing chickens in the backyard for dinner – “When in Africa….”

The Well – This is where we fetch our water for dish washing, hand washing, bucket showers and toilet flushing. Here’s hoping it never runs out!

Bucket Showers – an unexpectedly beautiful and refreshing thing

The electricity goes out all the time – literally, all the time. It’s almost more common to have it out than on. No worries though, we’ve got our headlamps!

Ants, cockroaches and mice infesting our house…oh my!

Moto Moto’s – who needs a taxi cab when you can hop on the back of a bike?? The people here carry pretty much everything either on their head or on the back of their bike. Now that takes skill!

The cutest african boys and girls asking ‘how are you?!’ from every direction – It really doesn’t matter how far you are away from one of the kids, they’ll yell how are you from a mile away. A few days ago, a young boy was behind me yelling, ‘How are you?! How are you?!’, so I turned around to wave without realizing that a man on a moto moto (aka bike) was coming right at me full speed! The guy was yelling ‘Mzungu! Mzungu!’ (mzungu = white person) and I jumped out of the way last minute as all the people on the side of the road laughed at me haha good tiiimes! It only took one time to help me learn my lesson and now I keep my eyes on the road in front of me! J

Internet café – it’s the café you would normally think of. It’s basically a 6′ by 6′ room with 8 or so desks crammed in. The good news is that it gets the job done and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters J

Skinny cows, pigs and chickens everywhere – They fill their days with eating grass and garbage.

Last but not least, our 24 day countdown for not washing our hair – currently going on day 8 … at this point, this is not working out. My hair is disgusting and we’re just now getting into a workout routine so it’s going downhill fast. Sick. I’ll keep you updated on this one…  …. ok, so since writing this I’ve washed my hair. I went 9 days and caved, but I’m proud of how long I lasted haha

Thank you so much for your continued prayers!!!! They mean so much to me.  Please continue praying and praising God through all of the blessings and struggles you may be facing.  He is good.  He is faithful.  He provides.
