I am and have always been a bit of a night owl (although some would beg to differ by looking at my sleep schedule…) But: given the choice – I would choose night. There is a peacefulness that the dark, coolness of night offers that speaks deeply to me, readily offering it's peace to ease my mind as I reflect upon the day.

I live by the highway…far enough out of earshot from the annoyingly unnecessary traffic noises, but close enough to hear the melodic droning of cars passing in the night. As I am reflecting upon my day, I like to listen to that white noise of cars and imagine where the people are headed at these late hours.

My family traveled a lot when I was younger, and at times – we were amidst those very cars, just passing in the night…

Ships that pass in the night and speak each other in passing;
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another, 13
Only a look and a voice; then darkness again and a silence.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote those words in his "Tales of a Wayside Inn" and no offense to Henry or his Wayside Inn – I hope he is wrong.

As I am praying over the people I will encounter on the field – I pray against that darkness and silence. I have faith that I will bring back names that connect with faces, that sew together my heart. I know that I will not add to the silence of oppression and injustice

::rather::

by encountering it, even if only in distant passing, that I will become a voice within the silence.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves;
    ensure justice for those being crushed.
Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless,
    and see that they get justice.
Proverbs 31:8-9
