I have tried to write this blog multiple times. It is a difficult topic for some people to understand; especially if you haven’t had an experience like it before. But bear with me! Everything I am about to say is very much true, and I will do my best not to exaggerate anything. Just state the facts of what happened, what could be felt in the room, and what I saw.
The event I am talking about happened almost five months ago during our time in Mozambique. It was our first day of ministry after being in the country for less than 36 hours. We were told that we would be “going to church” that night. It sounded like it would be a prayer group meeting at the local church to pray for the community. So, at 7:30 we hopped into the back of the flatbed truck, which was our transportation for the month, and held on for the ride! We drove down the sand covered side streets of Maputo to our tin roof, no walls church. It was getting dark and we had no idea what to do. Luckily, the congregation who was waiting at the church quickly hopped into the back with us! It turns out our prayer meeting with going mobile.
We went from house to house to pray for members of the community and the church. We prayed for illnesses, finances, family members, healing and anything else they could think of. The 20+ of us would open by singing worship to fill the space with God’s presence. It gave me chills as everyone’s voices bounced off the cement block walls and echoed the most beautiful sounds. Then the homeowners’ would share what needed to be prayed for. We would all pray out loud, #worldracestyle, and then one person would close the prayer, and then we would worship again to thank the Lord for what He had done. Three houses down, and nothing happened outside of the ordinary. But then we headed to the last house of the night.
The moment we walked into this humble home felt different than the others. There was a suffocating presence hovering in the room. We began praising; and again the sound of their voices beautifully filled the entirety of the home. Then we asked what they needed prayer for. There were two women living in this dwelling. Both were asking for jobs and financial prayer because they hadn’t had an income in about a year’s time. Both had faces that looked sad and as if they had been through many life struggles. So we began praying.
The prayer leader from the local church, Raquel, placed her hands on the first woman and prayed for a job, financial blessing, spiritual wholeness, feeling the love of God deeper, and many other things. The woman seemed to receive it very well and with much joy. Then she moved to the second women. Raquel placed her hands on the woman’s shoulder and that’s when things started happening…..
The woman’s head bowed down and she started to become unbalanced. I have seen people who have been slain in the spirit, so I thought that maybe this woman was being filled up by the spirit so much so that she was tipping over in Raquel’s hands. But that was not the case. After a few moments of tipping back and forth, she collapsed to the ground. Laying flat on the ground she began convulsing and shaking. At this point, all of my team was freaking out. Some were praying louder, some were going to the other end of the room to pray and get space, and others could only stare in silence and try to understand what was happening. Raquel and the other prayer leaders from the church formed a circle around the woman. Raquel and her team got louder as they prayed; and though we could not understand what they were saying because they were speaking in Portuguese, we knew they were not playing around. They were commanding things out of this woman.
This went on for a few minutes until the woman flipped her body over on to her stomach. Raquel and her team continued to push us out of the way as the woman moved around the room. Then the woman began screaming back. She got up on her hands and knees and began to crawl towards the door leading outside. At this point, I was so confused and scared that I was praying to God that He would come and protection us all because I had no idea what was happening and I was afraid. As the woman crawled, Raquel stepped in the way and said “Jesus”, and the woman cowered away from her and the exit door. The woman sat up against a wall and began growling and scratching her legs while Raquel continued to demand things from her and the woman yelled back. This back and forth yelling, crawling around the room, growling and scratching went on for about 20 minutes in total.
It was loud. It was intense. It was war.
All of the sudden the yelling stopped and the woman got up. She was smiling and joy filled. All of the locals were smiling. My team and I were confused. They prayed another pray for the woman. This time you could feel the love in the room. Then we sang another worship song and said our goodbyes. I remember walking out the door into the darkness of the African night thinking over and over, “what just happened?”
Later it would be explained what we experienced: A demon being cast out of a body. The spiritual war came right up to us and showed its face. I will never forget the feelings I experienced or the things I saw that night. That was the first time ever that the spiritual world became this real to me. It shook me to my core.
For the rest of the month my team prayed with so much power and authority because of what we had witness. We witnessed the power of Jesus’ name. By the end of the month many of us, including myself, had experiences where we would pray for someone at the end of a church service and would end up casting out a demon.
God is good, all the time; And all the time, God is good.
