I have now been in Costa Rica for just under a month. There are some key notes my squad has quickly learned:

  1. Drivers will NOT stop when crossing the street. As always, the bus will win that battle.
  2. Costa Rica is a very safe place, but is notorious for petty crime. Hold on to your phones tightly when sitting on the bus at a stoplight… people WILL try and reach through the window.
  3. Roofs are not climbable.
  4. Rice and beans. Beans and rice.
  5. Costa Rica is American too. South American. Do not call yourself American because they will respond with, “Me too.”
  6. “Puravida” can be used to respond to just about any question. How was your day? Puravida! Do you want more food? Puravida. *bump into another person* Puravida?!
  7. It is possible to nearly drown in only a foot of water if the waves are strong enough… not speaking from personal experience…
  8. CR is smaller than the state of California, but has volcanoes, beaches, mountains; pretty much anything you can imagine, this small country has.
  9. Costa Ricans are very graceful if you accidentally say that you are 80 instead of 18.
  10. Sunburns are a REAL issue.

Life in Costa Rica is utter bliss. It’s been a very refreshing and restful season and everything about this country proclaims His kingdom come. This month marks the halfway point of the race. Comment or message me any questions you might have about the past three countries (Thailand, Malaysia, and now Costa Rica) or the race in general and I’d love to answer them!
