I spent so many hours back home reading blogs like these. It feels so unreal that I’m here experiencing things that I read. It’s now been 2 months in Guatemala and here’s a glimpse of what my life looks like.
You know you’re on the World Race when…
-
There’s no way you’re going to spend more than 2 American dollars on a coffee.
-
You haven’t showered in three days and it’s normal
-
You sing “Don’t Stop Believing” karaoke style in front of an entire Guatemalan high school.
-
You eat rice and beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
-
You’re chased by a mob of clowns on the streets in Antigua.
-
The bus already has 3 people to each seat and an aisle stuffed full, but it’s not near full! We can still fit 25 more gringos in it.
-
You’re covered head to toe in bug bites.
-
Explosive diarrhea can come upon you at any time.
-
Getting up at 8 am is sleeping in.
-
McDonalds is considered a fancy meal.
-
You take a 45 minute bus ride to another city just to buy a can of pumpkin to celebrate Fall.
-
You have no idea what movies and music are popular back home.
-
Wearing chacos with dresses is considered fashionable.
-
You hoard food under your bed.
-
Sitting in a pool of your own sweat is expected and can sometime double as a shower.
-
Getting bed bugs is normal.
-
Two people on your squad have already pooped their pants.
-
You spend a weekend at a luxury resort on the beach for under 20 American dollars.
-
You have no memory of personal freedom anymore.
-
You buy a machete just to open a coconut that your squadmate picked from the tree himself.
-
Toilet paper is always placed in the trashcan; never flushed.
-
You think nothing of a stray dog walking into a restaurant.
-
You don’t remember what carpeted floors feel like.
-
You wear the same jeans for 2 weeks in a row without washing them.
-
You forgot what a dishwasher and microwave are.
-
You hike an active volcano and roast marshmallows in the lava.
-
Poop and farts are normal conversation.
-
You learn how to listen to God’s voice.
-
You miss home so badly it actually physically hurts.
-
You lose count of how many strangers you pray for.
-
You’re open to the hundreds of ways God can absolutely transform your life.
