I spent so many hours back home reading blogs like these. It feels so unreal that I’m here experiencing things that I read. It’s now been 2 months in Guatemala and here’s a glimpse of what my life looks like.

You know you’re on the World Race when…

  1. There’s no way you’re going to spend more than 2 American dollars on a coffee.

  2. You haven’t showered in three days and it’s normal

  3. You sing “Don’t Stop Believing” karaoke style in front of an entire Guatemalan high school.

  4. You eat rice and beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  5. You’re chased by a mob of clowns on the streets in Antigua.

  6. The bus already has 3 people to each seat and an aisle stuffed full, but it’s not near full! We can still fit 25 more gringos in it.

  7. You’re covered head to toe in bug bites.

  8. Explosive diarrhea can come upon you at any time.

  9. Getting up at 8 am is sleeping in.

  10. McDonalds is considered a fancy meal.

  11. You take a 45 minute bus ride to another city just to buy a can of pumpkin to celebrate Fall.

  12. You have no idea what movies and music are popular back home.

  13. Wearing chacos with dresses is considered fashionable.

  14. You hoard food under your bed.

  15. Sitting in a pool of your own sweat is expected and can sometime double as a shower.

  16. Getting bed bugs is normal.

  17. Two people on your squad have already pooped their pants.

  18. You spend a weekend at a luxury resort on the beach for under 20 American dollars.

  19. You have no memory of personal freedom anymore.

  20. You buy a machete just to open a coconut that your squadmate picked from the tree himself.

  21. Toilet paper is always placed in the trashcan; never flushed.

  22. You think nothing of a stray dog walking into a restaurant.

  23. You don’t remember what carpeted floors feel like.

  24. You wear the same jeans for 2 weeks in a row without washing them.

  25. You forgot what a dishwasher and microwave are.

  26. You hike an active volcano and roast marshmallows in the lava.

  27. Poop and farts are normal conversation.

  28. You learn how to listen to God’s voice.

  29. You miss home so badly it actually physically hurts.

  30. You lose count of how many strangers you pray for.

  31. You’re open to the hundreds of ways God can absolutely transform your life.
