“What are your expectations for The World Race?”
That’s a question every racer has been asked at least a hundred times. I wish I could say I have none, but that would be a lie. I do have expectations, and I believe to an extent, everyone does.
I expect the food to be crazy, weird.
I expect that I’ll get nasty dirty and won’t always be able to take a shower.
I expect to cry myself to sleep from homesickness.
I expect that I will want to give up and go home.
I expect this trip to be HARD.
But I know it’s time to let go of all my expectations. I need to give everything to God. I need to fully trust him with my fears and my future. I can’t keep living in my safe, sheltered bubble. I need to let God stretch me, and I need to let myself grow spiritually.
So I may have a few expectations now, but I am working on pushing them away and giving God total control. I know God wants to be first in my life. As a control-oriented person, I know it will be hard, but it is time I surrender my future to Him.
2 Corinthians 12:9 says “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
Putting my life on hold for 9 months with no expectations, no plans, and no idea of what lies ahead is scary, but also so unbelievably exciting. Although I’m letting go of every expectation I have, there a several things I know for sure.
I know Jesus Christ is going to completely transform my relationship with Him, my attitude, and my perspective on life.
I know I will develop close, personal relationships with the wonderful people on my team.
I know God is going to fill me with peace before, during, and after this trip.
I know I will return with a stronger knowledge and understanding of all of God’s people.
I know I will come back as a changed Woman of God.
